The other night some friends and I went searching for Apple Pie Hill. We found Carranza road and drove on that for a while. We saw a road to the right that was well lit and I saw a facility there that looks like some kind of military facility. We kept going tho and crossed over 2 little bridges and the road kept getting narrower. My friend started to get creeped out and thought that weird government experiments and the kkk and stuff were out there and if we were caught there we'd be in big trouble. So we turned around and went back. Besides the Carranza memorial, does this road have any scary or bad things on it? What is that facility? Is it the government or military? Is there kkk or anything on this road?

What you saw was a prison camp for boys.
And, as far as I know, the KKK hasn't been in Jersey since the 1930's. That's the sort of crap you'd find in Weird NJ.

You'll find trouble exploring around at night, but it'll come in the form of deep sand, mud, etc.
there was always some sort of trouble in the pines, just different types.
back in the early 60's i don't remember forest rangers, just the SP patroling the forest, just the paved roads
"deer jacking" dumping and stripping of stolen vehicles was rampid so at night if you stumbled upon the wrong people you could get a shot fired in your direction
then there were the "real pineys" some of whom were not to friendly and very territorial even if the property belonged to the state
you had to know where not to venture !

The pines are a rural area, not a straight-to-DVD movie with Pam Anderson and a Baldwin brother. However, sugar sand, mud, deep water holes, and just plain getting lost can ruin your night. As onehand said, you could run into trouble since the pines, are unfortunately, sometimes used to "dispose of things," but more than likely you'd be in more trouble if you were stopped by a State Trooper or a ranger with no better story than "Well my friend wanted to see if they were doing weird government experiments with the KKK and..."

Definitely don't go wandering into the pines at night if you don't know your way around. Apple Pie Hill is much more impressive in the daylight anyway, unless you're looking for some place to party and throw stuff off of a high tower, which too many people seem to be doing these days. Go in the daytime, get Google Earth or use Google Maps, buy a GPS, and you won't have any problems.
If you're young and back there at night, and happen to be seen by a state ranger, you can expect to be questioned and perhaps have your car searched. They have a big problem with partiers starting fires, leaving mounds of garbage, and getting hurt. Remember as well that there is usually a ranger sitting in the tower at Apple Pie Hill. If you do start a fire in the pines it can be seen from a long way off.
Bottom line: go in daylight.
How do you know they were kkk? I have seen prisoners out of yardville pt'ing in wharton. They were running a "bootcamp" for first time offenders.

I have been traveling up and down Carranza Rd. for many years, i even take my telescope out to a field off the road, it is alot safer than living here in Philly.

while out w/ my riding club in wharton one day, we arrived at apple pie hilll while they were finishing a controlled burn.. after the fire fighters got done admiring my bike, we started talking about being out there at night. i was speaking to the head guy for a certain area of wharton .. bottom line.. he said if there's a report of a fire at apple pie hilll at night, he WILL NOT go there (nor will he send any of his men) until he has a state police or a NJ state park police (the new and improved rangers) escort. he said he's also come across a group of ppl in black capes at night at friendship.. they were having a bon fire, had lots of swords, and had killed a rattlesnake (that they were now burning).. night time is WAY different out there.. i've been out there enough, and we avoid other vehicles...
