If you have not been following the exploits of our very own Kayak Karl, you may want to check out the photo's from his hike on the Appalachian Trail. He has been on the trail again since August 10. If you get time, give him a word of encouragement on his Guest Book.

I've been following him along. He started in Katahdin this time. Looks like he made it thru the 100 mile wilderness without issue. That is NOT Karl in the photo :D There is a similar sign for SOBO's.

What's the AT like? Rocky? Sandy? Packed dirt? Narrow, wide?
I've hiked various portions of the AT, from Maine to Georgia, but have never encountered sand. Lots of rocks, hills, sometimes mud and most of the trail is a narrow, but wide enough path thru the woods. Just wish that I had the time and resources to take 6 months and do the whole thing! To get a feel for the AT travel South to the Skyline Drive in VA. and do a 10 mile portion, then multiply x 200.

Dude, only 10 days ago and in weather that crappy!
We've been spoiled here it seems.
442 miles is about 440 miles farther than I would have cared to trek in that.
There would have to be the promise of much imbibing at the end.
You are a good and hearty soul and thank you for sharing with us! Be well.
