Litter in the pines!

It is getting much worse here on Long Island. Recently I walked along Wading River Hollow road in Ridge, which seems to be a dumping ground for all sorts of garbage. It seems to be mostly bags of rubbish left by landscapers and tequila bottles left by illegals living in the woods.

We have the same problem down here. On the road to Martha there's a nice ridge overlooking the oswego loaded with remnants of a picnic full of slobs. I've taken bag fulls of trash from this spot only to return a few months later and its the same old #$%@. I would encourage anyone who witnesses someone doing this to embarrass the hell out of 'em. Do they have organized cleanups in L.I. like they do down here?

We always bring big trash bags with us. It looked like a McDonald's exploded last time we were at the Friendship ruins. This may be a naive question, but who the &%#! are these people who do that? What are they thinking when they throw their beer cans on the ground? That the park service will just come and clean it up? It makes me sad.

Who can account for this kind of behavior, it literally blows my mind so bad I have to duct-tape my head before it explodes. I live in a small town, and people will drive by my house and throw cig. packs, tissues, butts, bottles, cans, fast-food crap---I am constantly picking it up every week---It boggles my mind, the thought process involved in this voluntary action is more foreign to me than aramaic...I just don't understand it!!!! Does anyone remember the anti-litter commercials of the 70's, a Native-American is at the edge of a river, and the camera pans to cars dumping crap out the window and garbage floating in the river, and then he turns to the camera with a huge tear rolling down his cheek---powerful stuff!

Yeah it is messed up. Sue, I don't understand it either...why go into the woods at all if you are just going to leave your garbage there. It is very frustrating.

It is only going to get worse. And the problem is if it was only paper there is a piece of mind that it will disappear, but what they are dumping will never go away without intervention. That is so the reason why I only explore in particular area's in the pines. I don't want to visit trash all the time.

These people don't think about what the effects of their trash dumping and since that is the case, they don't care. It seems to me that people have gotten to the point that they don't feel they have to be accountable for their actions.

Does anyone remember the anti-litter commercials of the 70's, a Native-American is at the edge of a river, and the camera pans to cars dumping crap out the window and garbage floating in the river, and then he turns to the camera with a huge tear rolling down his cheek---powerful stuff!

The version I remember was one on a street corner, and somebody tosses out a fast food bag, and the camera pans to him with a tear down his cheek.

Well, I now have an idea of where at least some of the garbage comes from. We went paddling on the Wading river yesterday (WOW, what a day), and apparently, a lot of other people had the same idea. The canoe rental places were doing a landoffice business, it seems. Dumped canoes all up and down the river, and every time one flipped, out came their water bottles, baggies full of sandwiches, chip bags, beer cans, etc.

Hey, speaking of the wading river, we happened upon the wreck of what looks like a very old steel boat upstream about a half mile from Evans Bridge. Anyone know the story behind that?

While I do agree with you, I often visit the same haunts and sometimes look for areas that are trashed to see their latest saddened state. A reminder of sorts. Morbid in it's own way I suppose.

One day I would like to spy a repeat offender.

I know the area well and I'm sure many of the participants in the clean up know the area well(The Wading River ). I might hit that area a little along with assisting the Pestletown crew.
