Honestly, I really miss spending the amount of time on forums here that I did in the past. Reading the trip reports, scheduling outings, and just general Pines talks always made for time well spent. I always looked at responses as excellent little writing exercises. About a year and a half ago though my life changed. It was no secret in my circle of friends and colleagues I was looking hard for a new job. Working as a ranger at Independence Hall was rewarding in many ways, yet after almost a decade there I felt bored. Really, I felt like a high paid tour guide and the commute into the city was starting to really get to me. That’s when the job search started. My goal was to find a good regional curator, or director job. Opportunies came up, but they weren’t the right fit for me, and after three years I thought I was not going to find the position I wanted, at least without really relocating. And then it happened. I found a position on a barrier island in Cape May NJ working as a curator/director. The pay is superb, the work challenging, and the setting, well that goes without saying. I traded train commutes into the city for all the beauty a barrier island has to offer; wonderful waterways, amazing species of birds everywhere, and super back bays and beachfronts. My daily commute up and down route 50 is another fun part of the day, watching the woods of atlantic Co. forest around me is never a dull moment. I feel blessed, without being to hokey.
Downside, at least currently, is the workload. Redesigning a museum that was not professionally run is quite a task. With the goals I have in mind, namely accreditation, I haven’t had a ton of time for the use of good ol’ PB forum. Things have leveled out some and I thought it would be great to share some of the hard work I put in here. I have a website up and running and new exhibits galore. So if you have a free second or two check out my site and pr work and let me know what you think. Thanks all,
PB~
