I just got my New Car Registration in the mail.....what a joke! Printed on a piece of paper that you have to cut out with a pair of scissors. No plastic coating, all that quality and I paid a extra $1.50.Next time I go to the MV and not do it by mail.

They hand you the same thing that the MV. They haven't done laminated registrations in a long time.

I never cut it out. I just leave it in the big piece of paper and stuff it in the glove box.

:). Same here. Just got my (2) for camper and hauler trailer and thought they cheapened them up because they were's actual vehicles. I guess it's across the board now. I have a laminator here, so I was able to to take of it, but still................

The ink isn't the best of quality either. I had my new registration sitting on my desk for a couple of days and the small amount of sunlight that crossed over it created a faded band. I was going to cheaply lami-tape it, but I just stuffed the document into the glove box. I will let the police deal with the poor quality if and when the time comes. My license plates are coming apart also, so the addition of a cheaply produce registration comes as no surprise. I could have printed out my registration my self and did a better job!

Did you ever try to renew your registration on line? They charge a convenience fee of $3.00.

So I just got my Driver License renewal notification, and it says that I can renew by mail. There's more info online here

http://www.nj.gov/mvc/Licenses/HowToRenew.htm

Mail-in Renewals: Skip the Trip begins November 2012

Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) customers born on/before December 1, 1964 are eligible* to skip the trip to an agency and conveniently renew their driver licenses or non-driver IDs through the mail beginning with those expiring in November 2012.

There is no need for these customers to visit an agency for renewal. Eligible customers will be mailed renewal materials along with instructions. Upon completion of the renewal process, the customer will be mailed a new, four-year photo document (using the photo currently on file) within 7-to-10 business days. Customers are advised not to wait until the last day of their renewal month to renew by mail as they may not receive their new document prior to expiration.

Skip the Trip Frequently Asked Questions [pdf]

Note: Customers who are eligible for mail-in renewal and decide to visit an agency instead will be required to present 6 Points of Identification and have a new photo taken..

This all sounds good to me, which is what worries me. ;) Has anyone else used the mail-in option? How did it go? License doesn't expire for over two months, so I assume that's plenty of time?

I just got mine, and this really is cheesy looking. Ben, not sure what you are talking about, but I have my 2012 registration right here and it was perforated and plastic-coated.

I just got mine last week and no plastic or perforation. A piece of paper, I could print my own. I didn't cut it out.

My mom lives in a town where the police have the new camera's that scan all tags and they instantly know if your registration expired among other things. Last week she went out to her car to look at her registration because she felt it had to be about up, and to her surprise she only had a 2011 registration. A quick trip to the DMV confirmed she never acquired a registration last year and has been driving unregistered for 11 months. She had to pay for both years to acquire a new one.

I must say that MV did an astounding job Saturday. I was in and out of the Egg Harbor office in about ten minutes, including filling out the paper work for both title and tags. The staff may wanted to leave on time and that could have been why things were running so efficient. The registration is still cheesy.

I got my car inspected last month. No lines and the employees were friendly and cheerful. I was out in 15 minutes.

I've heard that the inspection now only involves downloading some data from the car's computer to confirm that it meets Federal emissions standards. My understanding was that the old vehicle inspection was discontinued a few years ago and the only reason for the current policy is that it's required in order for NJ to receive federal highway funds.

Heh, since they changed the policy to 5 year stickers on new cars, I have never gotten an inspection myself. I was putting about 36,000 mi/yr on my car until I retired, so I never kept them for more than a few years. ;)
