Scott,
Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, ATVs really do screw up a lot of rare plant populations, as many riders haven't the first clue what is rare and don't care anyway. They really do a lot of damage and have decimated certain plant populations. OTOH, there are other plants that require a little (not a lot) of disturbance, so an occasional tire or two maintains its habitat. Strange, huh? I am aware of one property that is owned by a well known group that gets an occasional ATV, and the group doesn't get all up in arms on THIS PARTICULAR property (tho they would on their other properties) because it actually keeps the trails clear for them. On the whole, though, they are problematic--the fragmentation and noise through habitats of animals of Pine Snakes and Timber Rattlers, and the plants of course. So it's really quite a mixed bag.
But, ATVs are fun for a lot of people, so rather than just saying "stay out" we REALLY need to have ample trails and parks set up for the many people who do enjoy that recreation, then there is no reason for them to be where they don't belong.
Just my opinion.
