Pineys in Maine?

Here are two books that are as close to the piney lifestyle as you are going to get. Author is Carolyn Chute, "Letourneau's Used Auto Parts" and "The Beans of Egypt, Maine".
This is exactly the types of scenes I grew up in and know as piney life. No way this author made this up, therefore there must be pineys in Maine. (where author is from) So far, only there, they are known as clans by their last names. If anyone has read these books, would like your point of view, highly recommended reading.

I'm guessing you mean the lifestyle they lead. I have found folks living this way, either by choice or necessity in just about every state I've lived; from the mountains of the adirondacks of ny, in vermont and new hampshire, to the pine forests of the carolinas, even in the open places of wyoming and montana. The magazine adirondack life did some dooumentary articles about the folks up there over the past several years. A link if you search for them;
