All,

I had quite a bit to do today, and accomplished most. Out first stop was to photograph the burned area where Boyd first visited after the fire. So here is a somewhat Then and Now.

Here is the first photo I took there a month ago.

And here is today.

A nice size lizard at the washing machine there.

I am standing on it looking down and you can see the lizard along the top edge.

A close up of the trees growing back.

Found this large beetle.

This is interesting. We visited Lawrence stone #13 which is quite remote. I was there with Steve (Behr655) and Jessica the first time so I have photo’s of the area then and now. Check out the vegetation changes after the fire, and also notice how small the stone seemed before the fire, and after the fire it appears to be much taller because the brush is gone

And a few years ago. Notice the vegetation around Jessica.

Later Jessica found this turtle.

And my most recent “Then & Now” photo. In 1976 I visted this monument and my friend took this photo. I never remembered where it was, but over the past year when I had time I was narrowing the location down when I found some higher and lower numbered ones. Today, I finally found it.

Real nice pics, the forest and the wildlife are on the rebound.

A question? Was the Gunter chain composed of a 100 links the main instrument besides astronomical observations for determining surveys like the lawrence line.

Very nice Steve! Thanks. I would have went yesterday but the car problems required my attention.

If anyone has not visited that area, you better go soon. It will start drastically changing. Most likely this winter will still be a good time to explore there once the new vegetation falls off, but after that it will be wild again.

Guy, just to let you know that is a mud turtle, found on land alot commuting between ponds or laying eggs. Nice pics.

Dragon,

Thanks for the info. I did not know that.I actually took photo's of it quickly and continued on. On the way back I thought of you. I was not sure how well my first ones were, so we found it again and repeated the photo's.

I also stood on the washing machine (pretty sad to use trash as a land mark, only in Jersey I guess) and took some pictures 5 days after the fire. I had planned to go out in the fall to check it out again, but after viewing the photos, I think I'll go sooner. Thanks for posting the pictures.

I bet the sales guy who sold that machine years ago would have never guessed that it would become a landmark in the middle of the barrens.

BTW. I don't think I mentioned it before, but the day the fire really flared up, and before I was aware of the fire. I was at Oswego lake beach. entirely alone. I saw the red glow and smoke on the horizon and I started to think that it must be a fire. within an hour I could see the flames way above the tree tops. I figured it was coming from warren grove and I swear I said to myself "somebody was off target at warren grove again":D

It was something to see, and especially cool that I had the view all to myself. I had never seen a forest fire that close up before and even though I was miles away I began thinking I had better get going at a certain point.
