The other day I was driving along RT.539 past Whiting Rd. towards RT.530 and noticed, on my left, a very large rock/boulder painted red, white, and blue with various American and POW/MIA flags around it. This was the first time that I have visited this neck of the Pines so, with that being said, can someone tell me the explanation behind this very patriotic site? Thanks.

Paul:

I’m not sure I can answer your question, but here are two past discussions of the rock:

Yes , the old report by Badfish740 is exactly what happened. I heard the rock came from Trap Rock, up near Hopewell, but it doesn't matter. The story was written up many years ago in one of the L.B.I. newspapers by someone who was around at the time. As I recall, it was in the twenties. On it's way to Barnegat Light. Not worth trying to reload it. In the eighties and nineties, it would be repainted several times...a week.

Thanks for the info. gentlemen. Not having ever seen it before I was very curious to say the least. If I had more time that day I would have stopped and checked it out.

Apparently somewhat recently it had become a flash point for anti-war/pro-war people. It was getting so bad that they were thinking of getting rid of the thing.

I'm glad it stayed.
