I keep seeing GPS systems for laptops and PDAs but do they work with desktops too?

It depends on what the GPS is. For working with a desktop, you're much better off getting a handheld GPS and a USB or serial cable to interface with your PC.
Laptop and PDA GPS's offer far fewer features than what you'd get in a handheld.

lol I was gonna say to bad they will all be pluged into your camper 
I have the topo maps on my computer. I'm pretty sure you can use the gps with those. Unless I'm mistaken.
