Stones Pints Smokers

I went on a grand four county excursion yesterday, first stop was at Atsion to buy another topo map, someone in my family has their hands on four of them, i found out this morning who it is, at the end of this saga i will identify the culprit.

Went south on rt.206 to the left turn for Batsto, the blueberry pickers were out in full force yesterday, took a little side trip through Green Bank, then New Gretna, then arrived in Bass River State Forest.

Me and my friend George found a Burlington County, Ocean County boundary stone, we had one foot in one county, then the other foot in the other county, neato, we proceeded to another boundary stone that we found last weekend. This is the stones part of the trip.

Back out to rt.542, past Batsto, to Richards Ave. for a little sightseeing, then back to rt.542, past the glider airport, picked up a pint of organic blueberries for 2.00 bucks a pint, it was a self serve trust payment stand.

Proceeded back to rt.206 north to a place i haven't been to in 20 years, made a left on rt.536, went as far as Arrowhead Ave., made a ubee then on to Pestleton, went as far as Wharton ave. where the pavements ends, decided against going down Wharton, road looked like a rutted ditch, seems the irresponsibles had a good time tearing Wharton Ave. up.

Went back to rt.206 north, now for the pints and the smokers part of the trip, stopped at the Pic for 1.50 Yuenglings, and a bakers dozen smoker hot wings, haven't been in the pic for many moons either, enjoyed it, it has changed quite a bit.

Proceeded to rt.541 north to Medford Lakes, Aetna Lake was bone dry, to Jackson rd. past Sally Starr's pizza across rt. 30 to Berlin to rt. 561 for a long nostalgic ride home.

Passed the Berlin Mart, there is no longer a Pennsauken Mart, onward to Clementon, past the park where alot of my youth was spent, up to Blackwood, drove on the black horse pike for a while to rt. 41 north to rt.30 the white horse pike, wanted to see an old favorite place of mine Edmund Scientific, it is now Anchor Optics and Edmund Industrial Optics, the store is long gone, i bought my first telescope there, also like the unusual stuff they had there, the living pyramid, the whole earth catalog, and other neat stuff,

Back to rt.30 west, past the old ritz theater, past the old chip and putt place in Oaklyn, to rt.30 and rt.130 circle, there is construction at the circle on the northeast side, rt.30 definitely needs a repave job, my seven second anti skip alpine cd player was not playing too well on that road, on to Pennsauken where i lived for four years, then over the Betsy to home. Sorry about the non pine barrens nostalgia, but it brought back a lot of memories.

All in all i was in four counties today, had my feet in two of them at the same time, rode the black horse, rode the white horse, on a half of tank of gas. You can tell i was in no hurry to get home. From a Supertramp recording " I took the long way home. "

Oh yeah, the culprit on my topis was my six year old grandson, i asked why did you take them without asking me, he said he was fascinated with them, what could i say, i think there is a future explorer in my family.

What a trip on a half tank of gas.
What motor you runnin', Briggs and Stratton?
When you were on Wharton Ave you were in my and Largo's front yards.
Wharton Ave. to the west of Pestletown is in good shape and ends at the NJ Transit line. There are neat remnants of the old Wharton Ave Bridge foundation that used to go over the RR at that location.
Wharton Ave. to the east is rutted up pretty good but most of the holes have a loop around.
My son is always pulling out his numb-nutted buddies out of that stretch.

My friend George just put in new plug wires, spark plugs, new spark pack, i also had the windows down on the car, no air on, i get that boxed in feeling with the windows up, unless the wife is in the car :), then the air goes on, in the very near future i will be exploring in you and Georges area, Parkdale, etc., besides the yuenglings, i really enjoy a real good homemade wine. :guinness:

Actually, Anchor Optics is not new. It is as old as Edmund's. Norman Edmund, the founder, started it using a PO Box in Haddon Heights to sell lenses only. I made a special trip and would pick up the mail at the Post Office three times a week and the orders were processed right along with other Edmund mail orders. But the paperwork was a different color without a mention of Edmund's at all. The customers for 50 years never knew where their lenses came from.

On one such trip I was in an accident in a snow storm and was criticized by the office for being honest about what happened.

Guy:

Did you work in the office or the retail store? Did you know my old and now departed friend, George Adams, who worked as a machinist at Edmunds? George was a great guy who maintained a serious interest in all things railroad!

Best regards,
Jerseyman

I sure do remember him. I was working at the Sunoco in Marlton and a friend of mine who I met because he also owned a Land Cruiser was a machinist at Edmund's with George. My friend told me to go there when the Sunoco closed and that is how I got the job. George would sit with us during lunch at times, but I did not know him well. I seem to remember being told by my friend that he had an interest in trains.

I worked there from 1977 to 1981.

Honesty is the best policy, but sometimes we have to pay for that credo. It also happened to me once at the former major chemical company i worked for, i saved a building from blowing up, my relief had left 30 minutes before i even arrived, he had a kettle rocking full of napthalene and 104 % oleum.

The question was should i cover for this guy, or call the plant shift manager, the midnight shift manager was a heavy sleeper, i figured by the time i got hold of him it would be too late, i instant reacted with what i had to do, turn off the feed of formaldehyde, turn full cooling on, i received a recommendation but also a writeup, nothing happened to the other worker, he was the building rat. The company said i should have called the shift leader first, just think, i might not be conversing right now if i did.

Jim,
Just getting to read this. Very nice day in some of my favorite haunts, Greenbank, New Gretna, Pestletown. Very sorry I missed the PM invite on the Pic!! Scott's words were echoed in my PM, Wharton Ave is a cool and easy travel to the old RR bridge. It was so nice to ride years ago. In the 70's and early 80's the Avenue went right to the bridge base proper just a smooth as a highway and you could drive up to it in anything but now, what is known as "dune buggy hill" at the bridge is all tore to heck. I have many memories and also the lack of memory a few eve's or so at that hill. To the Hammonton direction is drekk as Scott would probably agree. Due to plain ignorance. Keep enjoying your rides and with a little notice, I can join for an afternoon & wings. I'll keep my eyes peeled for the Fired up brown Taurus.

I am looking forward to go exploring in your area again, the last time was in 82.
