I know that area well! It's old farmland. first cleared by the Allen family of Allenwood in the early 1700s . There were houses on Allenwood Lakewood rd. as recently as the 1970s and a garage/ gas station. The greater portion was used as borrow pits to build up the Brick reservoir embankments. A lot of good trails now criss-cross the area, along with the giant Silvi plant. If you go as far east as you can, to Ridge road, there's some old farm house ruins just north of the parking lot on your left.

Further upstream around the Haven's Bridge (referenced in Springsteen's Darkness on the Edge of Town) area the river is lined with very steep banks. it is near this area that the Fenton gang's cave was purported to be. Always wondered about the Willy Wonka color of the river but there is a scientific reason for it. Downstream from the gauging falls off of Lakewood Farmingdale road the area would get loaded up with fishermen so there is definitely something in there worth catching.

there was an old mill there, right under the south side of the river.
