That first shot is very cool Bill, kind of ghostly, ethereal. I'll bet some black/white or gray tones throughout would make it real interesting.

Is the heather an island off the Batsto just upstream from Lower Forge?
Right by the Un-bridge?

Yes, just upstream. My favorite is below, because the location thwarts armchair tourists, since you have to cross the Springer first..."oh my, I'm not doing that, I might fall in! :p

that heather island is about .8 mi upstream from lower forge and on the east side of the river.right in the junction of springers creek and batsto river.

Last week we hiked a length of the Batsto River, from the railroad trestle south of Hampton Furnace to the junction of Springer Creek and the Batsto. The area pinched between the forks is beautiful and open, filled with a fine display of lichen and heather. With one more free Tuesday between us in quite some time, Alfie, Sophie and I retraced our steps in order to shoot a panoramic image of the clearing.

Here is the link to the pano: http://photosynth.net/view.aspx?cid=4f8c6537-ca12-493a-b52c-ff903a5efc21

And here are some sights seen and images captured along the way:

Al, that second to last shot is all the way at the end of my fave, right? I recognize the way the swamp begins in the background. There was a campfire site there too.

Beautiful lichen shots Bill. A tapestry!

yes Bob. Bill named the pano Lala Land because I think thats what you wrote on your map you posted. It will be Bob's Lala land forever. I hadn't been there in years since I canoed the Batsto, this time we headed south through the bush all the way from the CJRR. About 1.3 miles and it takes close to an hour.
The camp site you spoke of is still; visible next to the log visible in the pano.My dog went over there and dug up all around the edges and through dirt on the charcoal and glass remains of the party ao now it is covered up right nicely.I told her good job! I don't mind seeing the remains of old fires at illegal campsites since I've made a few myself but i do hate seeing trash in the fire.If it don't burn, pack it out.

So the Toop is beautiful in winter too! Lovely pics! I like the skim of ice, the shimmering greens, the wonderfully textured trunks . . . It's hard to choose a favorite, but I dreamed over the Sophie-watching-river for a long time. I think she felt the magic too. Welcome, Sophie and Sparky--you're a great addition to the team! We look forward to seeing more of your adventures.

That large pine bough (3rd from the end on Bill's) is nice. I can almost smell it, and the sun! Well....what more can be said?......the sun!

Is that a tree stand remnant right at the start of the branch on the other side of the tree?

It was rather miserable out there. But the All-New Tuesday-with-Alfie team has a tradition to maintain; this week we traversed the plains in the rain way west of Spain.

Just a few ...
