Does anyone have this book, WATERWAYS OF CAMDEN COUNTY
A Historical Gazetteer by William R. Farr. Has anyone ever seen it, read it?
Thanks
Chris
Chris:
I have the book in my library. Bill Farr, a lawyer by profession but a historian at heart, worked on Camden County place names for over forty years. He sought to find the earliest usage of a given toponym and provide references to all the material that discussed a particular place name.
Waterways was the first of a planned trilogy, the second being water mills and the third being landed place names; watermills is still in editing and I'm not sure landed place names will ever be published except, possibly on a website. Research on the third of the series ended with his death in 2005. While Bill missed one or two waterbodies in his work, nonetheless the book is a well-documented exhaustive study of waterways in Camden County and the origins of their names, as well as historic sites surrounding these waterways. I would recommend anyone on this list who has an interest in waterways purchase this book!
Best regards,
Jerseyman
P.S. For full disclosure, you should know I worked on the book, providing some editorial effort. I also designed, typeset, and arranged for the printing of the volume.
