    Mushroom Foraging/Theft...a fine line?

I’ve dealt with this issue more than a few times, although not on the public easements in front of homes, but rather on larger public properties, namely parks. In most cases the regulations are phrased in a sweeping fashion, banning removal of any plant material. Picking blueberries, mushrooms...

    Hike in Ocean County wetlands?

Enos Pond County Park, in Forked River, has a small trail system. Not really what I would call hiking length but good for some short exploration or nature study. Cattus Island Co. Pk. in Toms River has longer trails. The nature center is still closed due to Sandy damage but the park and trails...

    High Crossing never disappoints

Funny, they went through stuff like that on the television commercial for the truck. :p But, come to think about it, I do recall some fine print flashing by fast at the bottom of the screen.

    Sawyers Permethrin

At work we order the Repel brand Permethrin from Forestry Suppliers in old fashioned spray cans. They aren't the cheapest source around but there is a slight discount for the 12-can case, which we usually order.

NJ Parks and Trails closed due to Gov't Shutdown

I understand why staffed facilities are closed but find the concept of "closing" saltmarsh areas somewhat ridiculous. It somehow reminds me of the scene towards the end of National Lampoon's Vacation, where Clark asks the owner of the theme park what he would do if he got to Florida and the...

NJ Parks and Trails closed due to Gov't Shutdown

My understanding is that the shutdown applies to the entire refuge system, including Forsythe. No hunting and fishing on refuge lands. I think the refuge's website is even down due to the shutdown. A search directs you back to the Dept. of the Interior's site.

    Pizza Tonight

We've been getting our pies there for twenty five years and never ate there once. Now I have to do so to see what I've been missing. ;)

    Critters unleashed in NJ

Bayberry attracts tree swallows? Their diet consists of mostly insects and other small animal life. That's not surprising however. The people who complain the most about nature usually know the least about it.

    suggestions?

Wells Mills?!?! Over-rated ;) How about the Crossley Preserve? Not too well known or used, yet not too far off the beaten path. Plenty of historic and natural interest.

    Airguns

That's interesting. Not sure how I feel about it. I have an English-made Webley that is certainly up to the task but I'd be concerned about some hunters just wounding game. I'd prefer to be able to use .22 rimfire, which is also well suited to younger hunters, but I guess the prospect of...

    Kayak Fishing Menantico Sand Ponds

The problem with my boat not being a sit-on-top type is that my rear end is below the water line, which is a stable position but not the idea vantage point. I do like the boat, as it is easy to carry and paddle but my more serious fishing is still done with my canoe. Not only are the seats much...

    Kayak Fishing Menantico Sand Ponds

I took my kayak out this weekend, doing a combination off fishing and exploring in several different water bodies. I found the fishing a bit difficult, since I have a decked kayak and I was sitting too low in the water to have good visibility and couldn't see the weed beds and other structure...

    Savoy Blvd construction

That strikes me as odd, with the line from Lakehurst to Woodmansie being owned by Clayton. I would not expect a change in its status at a point along that segment.

Why can’t the snakes cross the road

I can’t agree more with dragancjo’s comments. While I’ve seen some of what I considered repetitive and arguably unnecessary research over the years, the majority of it added to our body of knowledge and I’d far more prefer erring on the side of more knowledge rather than less when it comes to...

Goats to defend NJ historic site from poison ivy

Poison ivy is one of the more valuable plants on the barrier islands. Many bird species feed on its berries, particularly during fall migration. Protecting a few historic structures from it should be no big deal but I wouldn't want to see an attempt at eradication from an area.
