    Today's trip 12/30

I’m reminded of how much my wife and I enjoyed viewing the Harlequins the last time we were at BLSP in the winter. We need to get back out there! I did manage to see thousands of Scaup yesterday in the bay off Parker’s Cove. I was lying on the marsh at the time, covered with salt hay watching...

    Hawk shooting

It's sad that the people responsible for this are even labled sportsmen. They certainly are not.

    Ruffed Grouse

It is very uncommon and would make little evolutionary sense for a native (with the emphasis on native!) predator species to have such a negative effect on its prey. In fact, one of the basic principles of wildlife ecology is that prey populations are more likely to affect predator populations...

    Do you believe in aliens?

While not the sole cause, I blame much of this on the instant message/texting era we are now in. Our children are being conditioned to communicate with no regard for grammar, spelling or punctuation. When one of my children send me an e-mail now I feel like I’ve intercepted a communication...

Thoughts on ATV use in New Jersey.

You might be giving the general public, who don’t frequent forums like this or do other types of research, too much credit. I’d be willing to bet that many first time ATV buyers have no idea how limited their legal opportunities to ride in the state are before they make their purchase . The guy...

    anyone know this place ?

I know this tract very well. I grew up about a half hour away and hiked, fished and hunted Ramapo Mt. State Forest many times. There are two separate parking lots on Skyline Drive used to access the tract. A blazed hiking trail leads to the lake from the southern lot, and a deteriorating paved...

Thoughts on ATV use in New Jersey.

I’ve pretty much avoided this topic in the past as well, since my own views were sometimes represented by others here and I didn’t really have much to add to what had already been said. But I would like to weigh in at this point. First, as a gun owner and hunter, I am already very sensitive to...

    Atlantic County Exploring Part.2

Great pics Jim! One feature often overlooked at the Weymouth site is the steel bridge you cross just before turning into the park entrance. This bridge was placed on the state register of historic places a few years back (perhaps a federal listing as well) and is of a type designed and patented...

Interesting Foundations at Estell Manor Park

Boyd, Yes, they were right near the powerplant ruins, just on the other side of the boat ramp. Since my first post, I found a copy of the park's trail map that notes the farmhouse ruins as well, but no other information. Since a few of the stones in the nearby graveyard date back to the...

Hunter, 72, injured in fall from stand

I was just having a discussion this morning with a person who feared going hiking during hunting season. I told her that the statistics don’t indicate that her getting shot is a likely threat and if it really was, more hunters would be getting shot, as opposed to the much more common hunting...

Interesting Foundations at Estell Manor Park

I've explored the various ruins of the Bethlehem Loading Company several times in the past but found something new the other day and I was wondering if anyone on the forum could shed light on it. Along the dirt road that turns to the north from the end of Artesian Well Rd., there are what appear...

    Ruffed Grouse

I lived in Passaic County up to 1982 and was an avid grouse hunter. On my best days I flushed as many as a dozen and on my worst perhaps two or three (I hate to say how few I actually brought home. Only another grouse hunter would understand!) When I’ve hunted those very same woods in recent...

    Get out and vote!!!

While it’s not a popular view, I also feel it does matter who you vote for. I never agreed with encouraging people to vote just to blindly pull a lever and exercise their rights. Poorly informed or uneducated voters are part of the reason our country is in the state it’s in. I’m not suggesting...

Many agree on need to thin pinelands, but disagree on whether to use fire or ax

I think sometimes we tend to take for granted our knowledge of the region’s fire ecology and history, some of which took years to gain and fully appreciate. Folks who just moved here from other states or parts of this state, especially those in the massive adult communities, don’t buy their...

Many agree on need to thin pinelands, but disagree on whether to use fire or ax

I agree with Bob in that the independent forester quoted in the article definitely has his own self serving agenda regarding thinning or logging the forests, and any recommendations he makes have to be scrutinized with that bias in mind. But that fact does not rule out potential value of...

    Franklin Preserve - Chatsworth

One of the reasons for the wide jurisdiction of conservation officers is the long standing principle in this country that wild game belongs to the people, not the landowner. It all goes back to that sore spot over the king and other wealthy landowners trying to bust chops of poor peasants for...

    Franklin Preserve - Chatsworth

I was told that deer hunting was allowed, but had to be done in an organized fashion, by members of clubs that were also involved in volunteer efforts on the preserve. This was a few years ago and I'm not sure if it's still their policy.

    Stupid ?

I've always found the wetlands to have the best combination of fall color from both trees and shrubs. A nice paddle on any stream or pond, with the colors reflected in the water, is my best bet for fall foliage.
