    Bear

Bears are supposed to be good eating. A buddy gave me some tenderloin from a bear he shot in maine once. For some reason it remined me of my black lab and I couldn't eat it. The lab loved it though. I've long heard rumors of bears being relocated or introduced here by the state myself. I even...

    Sweetwater Casino

Are they definitely rebuilding? In the emotional aftermath of Clayton's Log Cabin burning down the owners vowed to rebuild, but that sadly never happened.

    Bald Eagle sighting

Eagles are more common in our area than most people realize, particularly during fall/winter migration. The problem is that they are seen soaring overhead more often than perched nearby. Most people's bird ID gets worse as distance increases. A man I work with can ID most raptors by eye that I'm...

Old photos of Warren Grove range area??

There were several buildings along the range road abandoned by the military about that time, perhps dating back to the time the Navy operated the range, but I don't think the town of LEH had anything to do with them. Most of that land was transfered to the state, as part of the Stafford Forge WMA.

    Pigs.....

I'm not so sure I agree with the assertion in the article that using hunters to reduce or eliminate the population is a bad idea. Anytime I hear "We are from the government and are here to help" I get nervous. And that's coming from a government worker! :bang:

    New Kayak

I have both canoes and kayaks and enjoy them both. A kayak is certainly easier to paddle, especially in open water. If either boat will do on a given outing, I'll chose the kayak over the canoe. But I sometimes use my canoe for duck hunting. There's no way I can fit myself, a labrador, decoys...

    New Kayak

How were the water levels on the Oswego? I've had to do quite a bit of dragging across gravel beds the few times I paddled it in the summer in the past. It's definitely one of the nicest streams in the pines though.

    Sad news

I was saddened to learn of Gene's passing. I worked for him for a short time doing wetland delineations and endangered species searches when he had his consulting firm. Most of my early identification of pine barrens plants and animals was learned from him. At the time he was also serving on the...

    Sorry conditions off Jackson Rd

Dumping is one of the prices we pay for the freedom of access we have to many tracts of land here. When I first started exploring the pines after relocating from northern NJ 25 years ago, I was amazed at how many roads accessed the woods. Back north, dirt roads going into almost all private land...

    Historical Diversion

Like many high spots close to the water, I understand that the Admiral Farragut site is a potential gold mine of Native American artifacts that has never been explored in an organized manner. I remember hearing about a dugout canoe that was unearthed there at one time. I wonder if the parts of...

    Blueberries? Anyone?

I think I had the same reaction when I first read or was told it years ago. Blueberries and cranberries are both in the Vaccinium genus, while huckleberries are in the genus Gaylussacia.

    Blueberries? Anyone?

There are a few easy ways you can tell huckleberries and blueberries apart. Huckleberry leaves have resin dots on the underside much like bayberry leaves. You can often see them with your naked eye, especially on a sunny day. You can also rub the leaf on a piece of white paper and a yellow stain...

Batsto and Atsion: A Quick Saturday Adventure

Regardless of the status of the Batsto sawmill, I always found it amazing how easily the machinery could be converted from one source of power to another. Back in the 1940s when Tilden Estlow stopped using the water powered mill at Wells Mills, he sold the planer to Sammy Hunt, who welded on a...

Ben, I was under the impression the mill was still water powered. Did anything your observed cause you to think otherwise?

Small Then & Now: Allaire / Howell Iron Works

Always nice to see Allaire pics. That's where I took my wife-to-be on our first date. Walked the trail, visited the village and rode the train!

The Demise of the Short Horn Buck Club

This reminds me of Cliff Oakley telling me how he never shot a deer in all the years he belonged to the club that operated out of his cabin. He did spend quite a bit of time enlarging the bottle dump behind the garage for all the glass they generated! Another ineresting aspect of the clubs...

    Thunder in the Pines

Those growths look more like burls than galls to me. Galls are most often caused by insects and are created by the tree but stimulated by a chemical from the insect larvae for the protection of the insect rather than the tree. Burls are normally much larger than galls and are the result of a...

    Those darn flies

I live fairly close to the saltmarshes on Great Bay Blvd in Little Egg Harbor. The greenheads were pretty bad the first few years I was there. You had to run from the car to the house on some days. For the last 15 or so years, though, they stopped being a problem on my property. I never figured...

Aggressive swan exiled to Pine Barrens lake

I can't imagine why they would shoot herons. They don't eat plant material and wouldn't do any damage to the bogs. Also, being a migratory species (and not a nuisance one like Canada Geese) they have protection under federal laws.

Aggressive swan exiled to Pine Barrens lake

I have mixed feelings on this one. I may be an environmentalist, but I'm no animal rights activist, and have no great love for non-native species such as mute swans. But he's showing good judgement by attacking jetskis, so that moves him a few notches up in my book!
