    Searching Cape May County

I was down at Sunset Beach yesterday and was wondering why there were so many people there with scopes. I was in a bit of a hurry and didn't linger to investigate, or I would have pulled my own scope from behind the truck seat and hunted around myself.

    need help with hawk identification

I don't think I've even heard that before. I'm sure I fall victim to not paying as much attention as I should to the more common species. I need to slow down life more often and enjoy the more common pleasures. I am spending my day off delighting in letting my lab out every hour or so to chase...

    need help with hawk identification

Regarding the call of the bird you saw sounding like an eagle, many people have been mislead as to what an eagle sounds like by television and movies. In most cases, sound is added to outdoor filming during editing, and Hollywood long ago decided that the actual call of an eagle was not what...

    Pestletown

As it turns out, I ended up a few hundred yards from that spot shortly after my last post. Got a call from security requesting me to respond to the park to help search for a couple of lost teens, out on the trails well after dark. I’m back now. The teens are safe, but the lost dog that they got...

    Pestletown

If you like finding old cars and trucks in the woods, you'd love the one we found at Wells Mills some years ago after we did a prescribed burn. The fire cleared a dense patch of mountain laurel and exposed the rusting remains of an old Chevy truck that had wooden-spoked wheels and a crank start...

    Gus Heinrichs passes on

That must have been great to experience. Sorry for misspelling his last name. I’ve seen it spelled both ways in decoy collecting publications and never knew which was correct. I’ve always admired his decoys. They are carved in a style that is very much his own and very recognizable. That always...

    Gus Heinrichs passes on

This certainly is a sad loss. I am lucky enough to own a Barnegat Bay Sneakbox built by Gus, which I will eventually pass on to my son. I have also had the honor of having him volunteer to assist me as a boat building contest judge at the Ocean County Decoy & Gunning Show for many years. The...

    Broken glass on graves

I was just asked about the pine barrens tradition of decorating graves with broken glass. I didn’t really have any more information other than the fact that it was occasionally done. I assumed it was just cheap decoration without any deeper meaning. Is anyone else familiar with this tradition or...

    Cow Tunnels Under Route 70

I remember a similar tunnel under Rt. 1 in New Brunswick, connecting college owned farms on Cook College Campus. While attending school there, we used to use the tunnel all the time for hiking and exploring. I never gave any thought at the time to what they were used for.

    fishing in the pine barrens

I remember reading an article in an aquarium magazine about the problems resulting from collecting tropical fish from the wild, in countries lacking laws preventing it. Many species are more easily collected than bred in captivity. And when there is a market, the collecting will occur, legal or...

    fishing in the pine barrens

There are almost too many places to fish to list here, unless you can narrow down your preferred area. I’d recommend going to the NJ Division of Fish & Wildlife’s website, clicking on the fishing tab, then on Places to Fish. They give all the accessible waters, by county.

    Lehigh Valley

Very nice! That ice climbing looks like pretty extreme stuff. And I thought I was nuts when I used to ice fish! I love the pine barrens but the stomping grounds of my youth were in NW Jersey. Pics like this always make me feel homesick.

Pinelands Commission certifies Stafford Master Plan

I agree. It is a shame what has happened along Rt. 554 west of the GSP. If that land had been preserved, it would have made a huge block of protected habitat when combined with the county land and boy scout property to the north and northwest. One of the things that upset me about the...

    Bald Eagle sighting

I saw one on the Delaware River today just above Dingman's Ferry. I also was able to get fairly close to a flock of turkeys, taking advantage of the several inches of new snow to muffle my footsteps. Lovely part of the state!

Small Tavern/Restaurant looking for skilled Bartender (Chatsworth, NJ)

I don't think those rates are unusual. That's about what my son makes at the pizza place he works at. He gets a slight bit more if he's delivering (compensating use of his car). But his real income is the 80 - 100 bucks a night he makes in tips. That's for a roughly six hour night.
