What new things would you like to see here?

I know I've been the world's worst website owner and the best absentee landlord in history. Today as I was driving I got to thinking about what could be done to breathe some new life into the site - or if that's something we even need. I feel like we're on a solid footing for 2016, but since...

    The Alligator

According to Ellis Island records, Richard Emmett came over from Great Britain from Liverpool on the Issac Webb. He was 18 when he came over, so it's pretty impressive that he was able to buy anything so soon after getting off the boat. More info on the ship.

    The Alligator

The plot thickens. There's a Garret Hyres that had a tavern application in Jackson in 1844 and the record has a note: 1846 "Kept as such for past forty years". I requested that record as well. He has an application for one in 1814 for Freehold Township. Jackson was carved out of parts of...

    The Alligator

The Monmouth County Clerk has searchable records of tavern applications from 1736-1919. (Ocean County didn't exist until 1850.) There's no record of Garret Hines but two hits for Joseph Mount having two applications for one (or more) in 1844 and 1849. No mention of an establishment name, but I...

    Sawmill Locations

There's some kind of underground tank with an exposed pipe that smells like fuel at the one by Mary Ann Forge, although the actual sawmill base is a little further down the road.

    Sawmill Locations

Weren't the later ones gasoline powered, or am I just imagining things?

    Is Hermann all but gone?

Here's a pic of the house ruins from back in 2002 or 2003. Taken on my old Sony camera that stored photos on a floppy disk. We had the very first "get together" for the site there.

A Fine Time For Fine Wine

To the left is four gallons of plain apple cider, and to the right is one and a half gallons of apple cranberry mulled spice cider. Fingers crossed for success this time.

A Fine Time For Fine Wine

Well, I couldn't help myself. I picked up 5 gallons of apple cider from Solebury Orchards and I'm going to try to make hard cider this year. Maybe I'll be able to drink that fast enough.

A Fine Time For Fine Wine

I still have bottles left from my first batch in 2019 otherwise I'd probably make some more.

    Finding an Old Book

I don't know if it's the same book, but I have a copy of "Place Names in Burlington County New Jersey" by Henry Bisbee. It's a first edition, published in 1955. It doesn't say "Sign Posts" anywhere on it, so I wonder if the title changed for a reprint. Not looking to sell it, but if there's any...

    Fix Our Parks

I don't know how easy it'd be to get H1's through some places in the woods. They're wider than a lot of trails. But I'd rather see surplus mil gear go to the Park police rather than suburban police departments that don't have a legit need besides looking cool with their MRAP. I bet they'd catch...

    Tory Pine Tree Robbers

At the time, Shrewsbury Township covered all of Monmouth and Ocean counties. In 1779 a party of tories raided the Blue Ball Tavern (today's Allen House in present day Shrewsbury) killing 3 Continental troops and capturing a further 9.

    Fix Our Parks

I used to go out there 20 years ago. People would always bring stolen cars there to roll into the lake or burn. It would have made for a magnificent ORV park though but Hovnanian really wanted/wants to build a megadevelopment there.
