Test Pits on the top of hills..?

This website wouldn't exist if there weren't a whole community of obscure local history nerds.

    No worries!

Okay, having a picnic is cool and all....but in the middle of a pine trail?! LOL!

Nothing pairs with pickled fish quite like a quality ginger beer. They should have propped up a plastic skeleton in the seat. Amateurs.

    Tory Pine Tree Robbers

Yep. That Fagan is the one who had the cave near Farmingdale mentioned in chapter 22 of More Forgotten Towns of Southern NJ. It also more or less retells that story. The cave would have been somewhere in this area...

    The Jerseyman, Pineys and More.

Since that's still under copyright if anybody wants to read it you can download it directly from Rutgers here: https://jrul.libraries.rutgers.edu/index.php/jrul/article/view/1525

    Fix Our Parks

The species wouldn't be endangered if they were smart enough to use a crosswalk.

Mostly because I don't want kids who are researching their school projects to see dead animals here.

Test Pits on the top of hills..?

If they were archaeological test pits they'd typically only be one square meter. Since it doesn't look like that area has ever been used for anything industrial they could have been looking for Lenape stuff. I sort of doubt it though. Here's the spot on the Cook(?) topo. I've always wondered...

    Fix Our Parks

The Park Police should have someone search for "Pine Barrens" in Youtube and nail all of the people that are stupid enough to film themselves breaking the law.

You'd have to be crazy to take a car like that into the woods.

Also, was that Audi new? Doesn't look like it had a front plate on it. What a way to break your car in.

Bill Sprouse's "The Domestic Life of the Jersey Devil" seems to be the most reasonable explanation for the legend in my opinion. Essentially unfriendly Quakers.

    Fix Our Parks

To be fair, the state isn't using dollars, tax or otherwise, to maintain much of anything in the forest. Imagine if the state had an aggressive policy of filling in the giant mud holes and ruts in the roads in the Pines. Driving around would probably be much more boring to people that want to...

ATVs continue wild illegal joyrides through the NJ Pine Barrens

Bob gets the last word in. As is proper. Since there's already one other thread talking about this, everyone head over here.

Early 1900's NJ Pine Barrens Boundary Map

Interesting that the area from Long Branch to Navesink (northern coastal Monmouth County) was shaded as "Pine Barrens".

I've always wondered how to line up this photo. I guess that big white building on the right was in front of the packing house, and the house with the chimney is this building?

    Plants, And A Surprise Find

Totally unrelated to any of this, but when I worked for Princeton University I had borrowing privileges at Firestone Library (where I assume this book came from) and it was such an amazing place to walk among the stacks and smell that "old book smell". I believe there's also a grad student's...
