I should have sprayed my bag with permethrin!

Lysol won't do it. I'd spray the bag with permethrin if you have it. I am betting they are ticks, especially since you got them in the tall grass.

And here I thought I was the only Stern fan on this forum. :)

Former "Jersey Guy" taking over Don Imus' slot

You're right, they're totally priceless. There's been some great writing on that show. They are airing a two week "History of Stern" over the Christmas break. I will look forward to that. :)

Former "Jersey Guy" taking over Don Imus' slot

Yeah, you're right about that. They were more creative with their humor. I really thought they'd carry that into the uncensored show, but they were shot out of a cannon, right from the beginning.

Former "Jersey Guy" taking over Don Imus' slot

I have listened to Howard Stern since his WNBC days. The show is different now. It's morphed. I don't think it's any more or less funny. I think Artie Lange is why I like it so much now.

    Do deer ticks "nest"

No, I haven't done a whole lot of work with repellents in general, and defintely not with chiggers. Raising those in the lab would be a nightmare. I work mostly with insecticides in fleas, ticks, flies and mosquitoes. Repellents are a finite chemistry (meaning there simply aren't many possible...

    Do deer ticks "nest"

No, but it may put them to sleep for a while. When I work with fleas, I knock them out with carbon DIoxide, and I can keep then out for at least an hour before they start to die off. That would kill a mammal in a matter of minutes. Fleas are tough.

    Do deer ticks "nest"

Chiggers are mites, and they are pretty easily suffocated by oils. DEET is oily. But it's not a chemical insecticide. Alcohol won't do much. Permethrin will kill them.

    Do deer ticks "nest"

You're right Boyd, DEET is a repellent only. Permethrin is both a repellent and an insecticide. If I could just find a chemical that's not permethrin that has the repellend and insecticide activity, I could retire. One measly chemical. Great repellents are impossible to find. *sigh*

Yes, permethrin should work to repel and kill chiggers, too.

That sure sounds like lonestar ticks. Those are I think the most common species in the pines.

    Do deer ticks "nest"

Only the larval ticks are very small. The later larval stages and the adults look like, well, ticks. They aren't ever microscopic, I'd be surprised if a first stage tick larva was smaller than a chigger. Here's a photo of the sizes of the life stages of the deer tick

    Warning: This is a rant

Badfish, that was a really interesting read. Thanks for taking the time to post it. I am a new resident of the area. We moved to the Glendale section of Ewing two years ago and aren't all that thrilled with it. The house is great, the neighborhood is nice and quiet and the neighbors are...
