    Mount Misery Trail Report

As per my conversation on another thread with ecampbell, I have decided to write a review for the Mount Misery Trail in Brendan Byrne (Lebanon) State Forest. We walked the entire stretch of the MM trail from Pakim Pond and back. Entering the MM trail behind Pakim Pond takes you through the...

Looking for PB Tree Frogs and other amphibians

You most likely did. Spring peepers are more common than wood frogs. Peepers sound like a high pitched chirp, while wood frogs sound more like a goose. My son and I donned headlamps last night and went out to catch the vernal pool migration (first warm rains of spring). We stopped at several...

Question About a Few Local Trails

Hey Boyd, There was a link on the bottom that read 'download Garmin custom map'. I got a zip file that allowed me to zoom in on Brendan Byrne, and there were boxes that I could click on to view photos of the trails at that point. Did I hit the wrong button?

Question About a Few Local Trails

I'd be happy to write the report on it. The entire trail is 8.5 miles long. Going from Pakim Pond as a starting point, it would be more like 9.5 miles. I was going to cut off a few miles by taking the orange bike trail when MM intersects it, and then getting back on MM when it intersects again...

Question About a Few Local Trails

Hi Folks, Thanks so much for the responses! ECampbell, we were going to start at Pakim Pond. We were talking about doing it this weekend-and we don't have knee highs! Should we switch to another trail? Don't want the folks going with us to be too miserable. Are there wet areas in other parts...

Question About a Few Local Trails

Hi Folks, I am planning on exploring a few places in the pines that I've not yet been to, and was going to bring a few folks with me. I was planning on checking out the Mt. Misery trail. Would anyone be kind enough to give some background on the trail as far as whether it's excessively...

Looking for PB Tree Frogs and other amphibians

Webbs Mill, Batsto Lake, and Pakim Pond. I'm sure others here could give better locations, but I've heard good frog choruses in these spots. I love carpenter frog vocalizations, they're creepy but very cool!

    Nor’easter expected

Is that a pair of fir or spruce trees on the right side of the photo? Seems rather pyramidal for Atlantic White Cedar. Beautiful picture!!

    Pine ID

I've never eaten the berries, I wasn't sure what I'd be in for. Only eaten wild blueberries, cranberries and huckleberries in the woods. I'll have to try one. I forgot to mention something to the OP, I may be wrong, but whenever I see white pine in the Pine Barrens, I associate them with the...

    Whippoorbill's gift to us

Jersey Jeff, I got that one too. It's a lot of fun to put it into practice! Whipporbill, thank you so much for these recordings. I love the sounds of these frogs at night, and as Ken Walker said, if I close my eyes, I feel like I'm deep in the pines.

    Pine ID

Sassafras root always reminds me of froot loops cereal. Another favorite is, of course, teaberry. I love handing a crushed leaf to someone and asking 'wintergreen or root beer?' after they smell it.

$9.7 million to preserve 5,000 acres of woodlands and wetlands

I believe that there is some potential in this, the venom of vipers is especially designed to kill cells. Not sure how they would target the cancer cells vs. the healthy ones, but if they could get the venom to play a game of tag with only the cancer cells, it would be great news. Thanks for...

$9.7 million to preserve 5,000 acres of woodlands and wetlands

It's great news that this area is being preserved! I agree. It's a shame that people cannot see the benefit of balance and leaving things to be as they should, instead of how they perceive what would most benefit humans (a typically inaccurate perception anyway).
