Pinelands woodland survival seminar on June 18

He has been discussed here before, in some detail. I have read his books, and found his claims way beyond that of belief. After having spent so much time in the pines, his claims and experience are brought much further into question. I would consider his books fiction- based on (maybe) some...

A Great Day In The Pines

Piney Mike, you certainly bring up a good point and I never had a problem with beaver personally. The concern, as Bob pointed out, remains primarily on the adverse effect to the Webs' Mill bog. As a fisherman, I am pro-beaver as they tend to create larger, and more consistant water bodies...

The biggest beaver lodge in the pinebarrens is gone.

Correct, but it is difficult to appreciate the height and girth from this photo. Incidently, for those looking at this photo, the beaver lodge in question is not the thing in the foreground but the lodge to the left obsured by the dead cedar. Jeff

Late activist will be honored with dedication

Four mile spring preserve is great. I've been in there a few times but have always wanted to bushwack more. so now it is the Michael Huber Praire Warbler Preserve. Did I get that right? It's very catchy, I don't know why it is hard to remember? If I had a Preserve named after me, I would...

    Flying Squirrel

I've been aware that they are native to pines but I have never seen one. I am always on the look out. Thanks for posting that shot Bob. Jeff

The biggest beaver lodge in the pinebarrens is gone.

Guy, I am pretty sure I've been to the one you have photographed as I have been all over friendship. I'm not sure if you are remembering the one I was referring to. It was larger than that one. That one in game creek (not sure where game creek is) is very large but I don't think it is quite...

The biggest beaver lodge in the pinebarrens is gone.

For years I have taken friends from outside the pines to see the biggest beaver lodge (that I've ever seen) in the barrens. It was easily double the size of the next largest beaver lodge I had seen. Today I took my drummer out fishing and brought him out to see the lodge. Much to my surprise...

    Bear Swamp near Dividing Creek

Nice report Guy. Looks like an interesting area. I was out fishing with a friend all day and I thought I saw your car near carranza road, a little beyond Batona. I guess that wasn't you. BTW: that last photo is of club moss, sometimes called ground pine. Nice photos. Jeff

Chatsworth Lake and the Bog of Dead Turtles

Interesting infromation Dragoncjo. I did have an osprey flying about most of the time I was out there. I noticed lots of cedars but not a bonifide cedar swamp. The approach from the south was maple/gum swamp.

    Plant ID

I see them most often right long the river banks, just up from the water line in shaded areas. Often growing along the partially vertical edge of the bank. For some reason I always want to lick them. They look like they would taste good. I haven't done that though. Jeff

Chatsworth Lake and the Bog of Dead Turtles

Thanks, As for the turtles, ask and ye shall receive. BE ADVISED THAT SOME OF THESE PHOTOS SHOW DEAD TURTLES IN VARIOUS STAGES OF DECAY. for perspective, my foot is about 13" long in a sneaker. This is along the bank along the now disfuntional land bridge which once crossed the bog...

Chatsworth Lake and the Bog of Dead Turtles

When I got home my wife looked at me and said "ewwww, gross". My son (who is two) said "Daddy's very dirty!" The raptors and/or otter theories make sense but I am surprised to see either was successful in taking out a snapping turtle. If you see an otter without a paw or eagle with out a...

Chatsworth Lake and the Bog of Dead Turtles

Fortunitely, I had a can of sun screen, my fishing rod, and an emptly coffee cup between those sharp teeth and my, ummm..."business". I admit the picture makes it look a lot more threatening.:) Jeff

I enjoyed the report George, and those photos are spectacular. You know, it seems as though so many of the people I meet are oblivious to such beauty. I sometimes wonder how many others appreciate such things with more than just a passing glance. Reading your report gives me comfort in the...

All she lost: My sister's battle with Lyme disease

I think it was DDT. I don't believe there has been a substantial change in the weather since the '50's according to most reports. I think every year we progress from the last DDT spraying, the more ticks and chiggers we experience. Although, you would think that the populations would have...

Chatsworth Lake and the Bog of Dead Turtles

Thanks Greg. Yes, I could see how frozen ground and not having to drag a kayak behind you could make the trip easier. I can assure you that the best fishing in that back bog is from the bank. The otter theory is a good one for the dead turtles, however, these were large turtles, 13"+ ...
