Old, old bog on the Batsto

Inspired by the PBX great swamp branch thread and disscussion of the India sink bog. I thought I would share a quick trip report I took last fall. I live near the upper reaches of the batsto river. I discovered, via topos and aerial photos, a very old bog. It is much older than most bogs...

Great Swamp Branch & Nescohague Creek, A PBX Hike

I remember looking back at Jessica and seeing her up to here knees and thinking "Wow, she really is a trooper" Honestly, I don't know how she does it. She is one tough cookie. Also, looking at the ATV tracks on the birds eye photo...I think the evidence there points to a single ATV rider on...

Great Swamp Branch & Nescohague Creek, A PBX Hike

I love those old bogs also. I love the way nature reclaims them, and, as in this case, finding the evidence of man made influence. There is a bog of similar vintage near my house. It was very small and ran right along the batsto. I took a hike back there last fall. Very cool. You know, I'll...

    fishing??????

the water is too acidic for bass in the heart of the pines. There are a few man made lakes which support them and even a very few bogs, but they are not native and will not be found in the deep woods. There are some in the stafford forge bogs though...quite a bit actually. I caught one in...

    fishing??????

Yeah, the gloves seemed odd to me also. It is fairly well documented though. The idea is to use wet cotton gloves and you are less likely to drop the fish or squeeze him too hard. Surprisenly, this is not anymore harmful to the protective slime than regular human flesh. Jeff

    fishing??????

I used to eat pickerel all the time. Several times a week when I was fishing alont. Very boney, but tasted good. Then when the mercury warnings got more press I switched to catch and release which is all I do now with pickerel. I use singe hooks and I crimp my barb. I use needle nose...

    Destruction at Mount

that is a good idea for a sign, but it should read: WARNING: IF YOU DUMP HERE WE WILL HUNT YOU DOWN AND KILL YOU...AND THEN DUMP YOU IN THE WOODS!! I was thinking the sign at Mount could be a little less threatening though. BTW the spot where I think the photos were taken is here...

    Destruction at Mount

I know where you are thinking about Bob, but I don't think that is it. I think they were just south of the tracks below rider's switch, west of high crossing. there is alot of Truck damage in there and the area is very sensitive. You know, why don't we just put up a sign next to Mount...

    sand myrtle

To me, sand myrtle is one of those plants that seperates and defines the pine barrens from areas north and west. I don't think I ever saw sand myrtle growing up in monmouth county. Here was a nice one I saw today. Sorry for the bad photo. Jeff

Friday in the Pines and Not At Work

Ahhh, so I think from that photo of Guy on the foot bridge it seems my recollection was pretty accurate (concerning our disscussion on this spot). Is that right? Jeff

    Cougar vs Bear

I don't know. Bears are pretty tough, extremely well protected and ridiculously strong. The question is...what about a gorilla? Jeff

    Cougar vs Bear

I didn't know bears made those noises:rofl: Seriously, this is real footage of a cougar and grizzly bear. It is amazing how brave the mother cougar is when confronted with a far, far more powerful animal. Maternal instinct. Jeff

    Destruction at Mount

It is true there is precedent, like Martha, but it seems like filling in a celler hole when there is little else to preserve is basically elminating the historical site altogether. Also, personally, it seems to me that the main value of these areas are in our heads. That is to say, the...
