Minor article on turtle deaths in Middle Township.

There are going to be similar roads(culverts) done here in NJ.....unfortunately the culverts don't really work. But I commend the effort.

What kind of snake is this?

Hard to tell from the picture, many times when they just shed they have a velvet look to the skin.

What kind of snake is this?

Dave, black racers are a different snake....but even more pugnacious and cranky. The worst part about a water snake is the musk....its a horrendous smell.

    Franklin Parker Preserve ?

I spend nearly all my time on the preserve and to be honest have seen few deer. There are def a few hunters that I know but they are also volunteers on the preserve. As for the swimming hole, if people cleaned up there trash or even attempted to, it would be open. It gets to the point...

    Have you heard?

I looked into this a little and I've heard nothing about either species going on the T/E list.....though I wish they would put them there do to the extra buffers wetlands get when a T/E species is present.

    Have you heard?

Bob, I will look into this I have not heard that which is suprising. I've heard the boxie may go on it as well. I think this has more to do with trying to come up with stiffer penalties for illegal collection of spotteds vs. them actually being threatened. In no way shape or form are spotteds...

Chatsworth Lake and the Bog of Dead Turtles

Jeff, per the land steward out there the bald eagles are feeding mainly on Northern Redbellies. Also in talking to biologists Ospreys(which I don't see out there) take out turtles, and piles can be found around nests. I've seen osprey take out spotted turtles. As for the snapper that is a bit...

Chatsworth Lake and the Bog of Dead Turtles

Jeff, you are seeing the works of raptors, more then likely bald eagles.....but pancoast theory of otter could apply also. I've seen a ton of shells throughout the preserve, is a little unsettling sometimes.

    WMA cleanup project

I sometimes feel like any volunteer assistance with the state is unwanted by them.....I don't get it.....I guess thats why I do all my work through NJCF, their always very appreciative. I have a spot that needs to be cleaned up on 532/barnegat.....

    Speedwell DRAGSTRIP.....

How far down are they paving it? I was out there saturday and it looked like it was prepped for asphalt but only to the rutgers cranberry reseach spot. I will be extremely angry if it paved all the way down. The roadkill for snakes will be brutal as they will bask on the hot pavement.

    Uh-oh...Trouble

That is well said imkms. In all my expirience with snakes they are one of the most relaxed in the field. Stepping on one is a big risk in spots of the pines though....quite honestly I'm suprised it doesn't happen more.

    Uh-oh...Trouble

To help clear up myths about rattlesnakes before they get expanded. They are a very docile, non agressive animal. Sometimes they get nervous when you get near them and rattle, but for the most part they have a deep fear of people and get very stressed when approached or harrassed. They will...

    Hampton Furnace trashed

I use game cameras in this way often....they work quite well at night or day. You would have to place it in a spot were you can get liscense plates, so putting one were they park would be best. I had mine out for the last three weeks guarding some animal denning habitat the only thing I got on...
