Cedar Swamp Trail - Great Cedar Swamp Unit - Cape May NWR

Your right.I can't find it on any historical topo either.Never been to it or seen it.Is it visible from the road? Yes cedar grows ramrod straight though when they get old especially in open sunlight they can have very cool twisted lower limbs. These limbs shed in deep shade and tight growing...

Man Goes Missing During Hunting Trip

Yeah usually when the dog makes a mistake it's because it's young and inexperienced, not because it's nose isn't top notch.Sometimes I think I"d like a nose like a dogs but someone would kill me first time I ran over and sniffed their butt.Think I"ll just keep my third rate sniffer:-)

Man Goes Missing During Hunting Trip

If they got the dogs there withing a couple days or before a rain and they didn't find Him I"d say he's probably not in there. Ain't much that can beat a well trained dog nose.

Man Goes Missing During Hunting Trip

Did you leave the coveralls in the woods or retrieve them? People that are lost and frightened often do crazy stuff like strip and run naked till collapsing.Fear probably makes em feel stifled and running will overheat them. They'll even run across a blacktop road and straight into the woods on...

    Pine Plains Today

I like it when you drop down into the bowl you can't see 539 or the tower or anything manmade.Another area like it east of 539 where you drop down in a hollow and are engulfed by the Plains with no planes in view.

Cedar Swamp Trail - Great Cedar Swamp Unit - Cape May NWR

I bushwacked across that swamp once looking for the cedar in the core shown on the vegetation maps from the 50's.There is no cedar. It's a maple gum swamp through and through with the biggest piles of briars I ever had the pleasure of crossing. We actually ran across fell over trees like squirrels...

    Dennis?

It's quite strange that the Ukrainians and Russians can't seem to stand each other over there but come all the way over here and choose to settle together:-)

    Dennis?

As a side note I regularly use Weymouth road to get to the Barrens and the other day I noticed a green sign as I went to make my right off of 54 onto Weymouth that said Settlement of New Kuban.I wondered what that was? I had seen the old church many times but did not know what it was and why it...

    Are Coyotes a threat?

Never thought of that.I probably had a brushed out Mountain Man beard down to my chest at that time as well. Maybe what i thought was ornryness was just plain shock and awe on their faces?

    Are Coyotes a threat?

I used to park my truck off the well travelled sand roads and take walks at night. In the summer you get treated to insect and frog aounds and occasional owls, whipoorwills and coyotes and the flies at least are gone but in winter the night sky is at it's best and the sound of nothing but the wind...

    Are Coyotes a threat?

I have run into drunken partiers with guns shooting randomly into the woods in the dark and it happened tp be in my direction.I was young and bold then so i circled around and came in behind em and they turned out to be a pretty good bunch but all quite drunk.Wanted me to camp with em.I was...

    Re-Wilding North America

I have heard of Bobcat sightings down here my whole life and I think I seen one in the early 80's west of Union lake but it was so fast i can't swear it.Whatever it was it went about four feet up a tree trunk.Looked at me,hissed a low growl and jumped off the tree into the swamp and was gone.It...

    Are Coyotes a threat?

I agree they are a danger to pets but I think folks are going overboard if their losing sleep at night worrying about being attacked by coyotes. Wanna see something much more dangerous then a coyote? Look in the mirror. The coyotes know it too.
