The Jersey Devil Story as told by his cousin

Yeah, 1735 is the popular birth year. But I have, for some time, suspected that the origins of the legend date to the 1830's-1840's. I have thought that for these reasons: 1) the popular legend claims that the devil was exorcised shortly after it's birth for 100 years. It seems likely...

The Jersey Devil Story as told by his cousin

I was talking to a neighbor of mine (John) that I speak with seldomly. He wanted a copy of my album, 'Leeds Devil Blues'. He came to me the next day after getting the album and surprised me with some interesting information. It turns out he is a cousin in the Leeds family and he actually...

    Turks Cap Lily

Never mind, I think I can tell from the photo. It is near the water's edge next to some dumped branches isn't it? Jeff

    Turks Cap Lily

I don't recall seeing much sumac at all in the pines Bob. Is that sumac near a "disturbed" area in the black's bridge vicinity? Jeff

    Crabbing

I was swimming this weekend at Normandy beach, a little north of seaside. The water was very cold, like, 'I wonder if my genitals will ever come out of my abdominal cavity again', kind of cold. But there was no way I was going to let the 11 year old girl already swimming out there show me up...

    Has anyone come across...?

As Guy pointed out they are very common (and I've seen quite a bit west of 539 as well), but small and pretty easy to not notice. They are very cool though. The pinebarrens are definitely like another planet. Have you been to the pine plains yet? That is the area along 72 and 539 with miles...

    Carranza and Tuckerton

A wise decision. I'm not one for an abundance of signs in the woods, but there should be a dangerous curve sign there if there isn't already (I can't remember). Going northwest you see the curve comming but going southeast it comes up fast. Jeff

    Piranhas? Yikes!

I also had a piranha when I was a kid. His name was Pete (creative huh?). He was extremely aggressive and would hurl himself out of the tank (which eventually led to his demise). Anyway, the thought of piranha in Stafford forge or anywhere else in the pine barrens is very disturbing. I can't...

    Carranza Road

I'm with you. also, why do we want to promote more traffic in the woods anyway? the condition of some of the roads helps to keep some areas remote. pave carranza and it will see alot more traffic. I feel that the less asphalt in the woods the better.

    Adventure on the Mullica

I think he was out sunning himself for a while. I saw someone else in a kayak and Gabe go right past him without seeing him (and Gabe is very observant) I think the fact he was perfectly still made him easy to miss. Jeff
