    remote bogs

I understand your way of thinking here. I think the hole might be too large and, hard to tell from the pic, it is right along the edge of an old pit probably dug for the construction of an old land bridge. The amount of sand excavated from the hole indicates significant depth. Do pine snakes...

    remote bogs

You're thinking pine snake aren't you? The opening on the other side is comparible to the size of a fox. There appears to be an attempt at another hole just above the opening or, maybe erosion or intrusion from another animal. Here is a pic of the other side. Jeff

    remote bogs

Due to scheduling changes I was able to get out in the woods later today. I went fishing. I revisited some old bogs I hadn't been to in 10 to 12 years. Once i got there I remembered why...not many fish. However, it is an amazing area. This place is a strong contender for one of the most...

    Trail Journal: Batona 6/1 - 6/3/07

Thanks for the info on the water filtration system. I have always been curious about them. It seems your two tree method should be effective. I never got that involved about it. I just throw a line over an outstreatched branch. Jeff

    Mary Ann Forge and Cranberries

Yeah, I'm not sure either Bob. There is a large cranberry bog that utilizes the pole bridge branch on route 70. But between there and it's confluence with Mt. Misery there are several tributaries before and after country lakes. Jeff

How is that water filtration system? How does the water taste. How long does the process take?

Nice report and a great read. You are clearly an experienced outdoorsmen but I just wanted to comment on a couple pine barren specific points: That was a fence lizard (or swift) not a gecko. Your bear bag should be referred to as a racoon bag now (there are bear but very few and far...

    Mary Ann Forge and Cranberries

I got out to make a quick visit to the "old clearing" as depicted on the 1930 photo that Ben posted above, as it is very near my house. I had been there before, but did not realize it was once very clear as you can see in the 1930 photo. The ticks were awful and it is summer so I only did...

Yeah, it just seems to permanent for a saw mill operation, but it does seem logical due to construction, dating, and location. The pump house ruins are the newer (than the sawmill) ruins that are right along the old road and steep drop to the "bog" There are 3 or 4 celler holes and the pump...

    Snake Identification

Actually garters can be black, or white, sometimes pink or red with lace. Oh wait, we're talking about snakes here. Ummm, never heard of a black gater snake, at least not on the east coast. Jeff

I saw that. I am surprised the reservoir was still there in the 30's. According to some resources it was gone in the early 1900's. I guess Beck did come across the reservoir in his exploration of the area. Thanks to Scott for turning us on to this 1930 map. Amazing stuff. Jeff

    Mary Ann Forge and Cranberries

Very interesting. I am particularly curious about the area you labeled "old clearing". I have been to that spot but it has been awhile. I remember that you can tell the area was disturbed. That area you labeled "bog" I always believed to be lake bottom. There is a significant drop off right...

Or how about: If you want less crowds, and don't mind pulling your canoe through most of the river, then go when the livery says the water is low.

    Berries

Mark, I know of abandoned blueberry fields that are now state property. I will pm the locations to you if you want, but if you are looking for wild blueberries I would just suggest you look for any dirt road near water and you are set. The ticks are bad but with a little looking around, some...

    Tomorrow Morning

Great shots Bob!! So all the shots except for the last one were taken on the wading river? West of 563? How were the ticks. I was only out for about a 1/2 hour on Sunday and they were brutal!!!! Still lots of small nymphs, which are the worst. Jeff

    Oswego River

I have Robert Parnes book (from which most of the excepts that Jim has been posting latey have been taken from) and I think it is a well organized and helpful guide to the rivers of the pine barrens. That excerpt is only part of a longer chapter on the Oswego river. I agree that the last...
