    Barrens of fire

I too have been in there (but I don't think you and I have been in there together?) and agree with you whole heartedly Bob!!!! Although my time spent in there was mostly spent trying to get out again before being discovered:rofl: I could truly appreciate the wilderness of the area. Jeff

    Abandoned racetracks.

Interesting! I love browsing the woods on google earth. I found, what I guess to be, a motocross track in a very, very remote area of the state forest. It is recent as I tracked back on arial photos from 10 years before and it was not present. It is in a nearly impassable area that I only...

History of Enduro racing in the Pines.

Thanks for posting that Trailhead! I once was riding out in the woods and met the president of the ocean county competition riders (another enduro group) Rocky I think his name was. He invited me to go riding with a bunch of those guys and encouraged me to join up. I remember visiting their...

The Great Egg Harbor River with the Pinelands Commission

Oh, okay, when you said portage I thought you meant over dams and logs. Yeah, they are lighter and easier to throw around. Jeff

The Great Egg Harbor River with the Pinelands Commission

Do you think so? My only complaints about kayaks compared to canoes is that I find it more difficult to get in and out of them. That and the paddles can be a bit cumbersome in the narrow/overgrown spots. the stability, speed and comfort is a huge + though, it is also nice being so close to...

The Great Egg Harbor River with the Pinelands Commission

Ed, we made the run from the 8th street bridge in Penny Pot to a little beyond Weymouth furnance, under the route 322 bridge and immeditely took out on the left at The Palace. The Palace is the name of the livery, it is on the right on 322 heading east. It is a livery/bar/restaurante. I just...

    More Pine Barrens Weirdness

I know where your talking about Gabe. I recall that those are metal and on the left as you are headed toward Hampton Furnance from 206 right? I suspect that they were intended to provide water flow under Hampton road but were disgarded or replaced and just forgotten about. Jeff

Calico ( Highway To Hell )

Kindred spirit. I am exactly the same way. The woods are alive in the summer to the point of being almost overwhelming...and the smell of pitch pine on a hot summer day is nirvana. Summer is always an itchy time for me consequently. Jeff

The Great Egg Harbor River with the Pinelands Commission

I might have mentioned before that I have a friend in the pinelands commission. She invited me to join her and her co-workers, and her fiance (also a friend), who happens to be a burlington county prosecutor, so I had to watch my step. for a kayak trip down the Great Egg Harbor River...

Picture of a giant bird seen in the pines

Vultures wing spans can get to nearly 7 feet! I would say vulture based on 1)likely hood, they are extremely common 2) they are black. The head could be hanging too low to see, or it could be a black heading vulture. I have seen them around but they are generally a little bit smaller. Jeff

    NJ Pine Barrens

No. It is a fictious lake noted on a map (I forget which one) for uncertain reasons. Jeff

Gunnery range's demise may have big effect

I wouldn't mind seeing that easier (more state forest) but has there been any discussion as to what will become of the land in the event that the base is shut down?
