    Vincentown Park Woods Trail

Don't know where the trail is in V'town, but I recall there being a (possibly the only in NJ?) coral reef outcrop in the nw area of town that had been partially dug away. Within view of the Rancocas, I believe.

    Mullica Put-in Options

For that section of the river, I usually put in at Mordecai's and do an out and back. No need for a shuttle and you can get a good three hour or more paddle. Time your launch about an hour before high tide and paddle upstream as far as possible, poking into the various gunkholes, and then have...

    Bottle hunting reccomendations

Don't mean to be late for this party, and not to weigh in on the issue of bottling on state lands (done a bit myself, but always on private farms), but a couple of observations: the authoritays take the issue quite seriously. One time we left a friend with our boats in Atsion while we went to...

    Maine "desert"

Not to divert the thread, but that lidar link is amazing! Here's about where the "White Mtns of South Jersey" were: #lidar,39.309901,-75.122409,16

    Maine "desert"

There is (or was) a similar patch of "desert", although of somewhat different origin, outside Newport in Cumberland County. A large sand mine had created a huge pile of waste sand that must have been at least 60' high - taller than the treetops. It was slowly being moved by the wind, and you...

New Guy Wants to Talk Kayaks and Canoes

ecampbell makes a good point to consider. Depending on how far off the main stream you go, piney creeks can have a lot of downed trees / branches. Some you can use his method on. Others you will need to get out and lift over. This is usually much easier in a canoe.

Historic photo's of the "Pop Bottle" at the Warren Grove Bombing Range

How I love military R&D! That was probably the birth of the drone!

    EPA land grab?

Kind of a moot point here in NJ since DEP already has that authority. EPA thought they had it until several conflicting court opinions muddied their waters (probably because the initial wetland regs came from the Army Corps of Engineers and had differing regulatory goals, but that's just my...

    bay days

I recall researching land rights at Moores for some dike work in the 70's, and there were a number of houses. What surprised me at the time was that there was actually another road that had been laid out further into the bay that the one that remained. As an aside, one of the ditches behind...

    bay days

Me thinks you are mistaking old septic tank lids for gun emplacements, although I can see where the analogy could apply. You can see these gun emplacements still in use at Gandys Beach.

Camping with kids - how young is too young?

Never too young. We used to take a small playpen and set in up in camp.

    New Sweden

I believe there is a roadside historic sign for the vicinity of Fort Elfsborg, but the actual site has been lost to time and tide. There is public access, courtesy of PSE&G, to a small strip of beach below Elsinboro that will let you walk as close as possible to where the site may have been...

Bay Point to Go The Way of Sea Breeze

I spent an enjoyable couple of weeks there years back. Truly a slice of heaven compared to the overbuilt Jersey shore. If only they had taken the same approach with Mantoloking! The house I stayed in departed before Sandy came along; Bay Point was one of my early studies of shore stability. On...

Yummygal's Top 10 Sites in South Jersey 2013

Great poster, spung-man! Takes me back to my college days with Dr Tedrow at Cook College / Rutgers! And straying a bit off topic (and out of the Pinelands) its amazing how it has similarities to sand wedges in the Permian reef limestones of the Guadeloupe Mtns in New Mexico, created by outflow...

    Mannington Marsh

Practically all of Mannington Meadows was diked privately owned farmland well into the 1930's. A combination of factors led to the failure of the dikes, both changing farm economics and the construction of a "dam" by DuPont that diverted the entire flow of the Salem River to their Deepwater...
