    Atsion Area Murders

Doing research as most of you guys know, came across a couple of articles that you might all find interesting. One talks about the A J Rider "Cranberry King" murder, near Astion; another about some poor mentally challenged girl attacked and kill around the turn of the century...

Hmm, how does one acquire the land to have a private rifle range, I wonder?

One other question, anyone notice how perfectly placed the pine trees are along the rail line? I mean, literally along the track. Looks almost like they were planted. Any indication they were, post-rr closing?

    Behind Atsion

According to Historic Aerials it wasn't there in 1963, was by 1970. Sand quarry? Was the RR still running through there in 70? http://www.historicaerials.com/?poi=13946

    Shooting Star?

Do believe they are meteorites. Would be awesome to get a good, clear view of where one came down and check it out.

    Shooting Star?

I have seen exactly what you are describing many times (I commute from Toms River to Philadelphia 5 days/week). I have always thought they were meteorites, but I may be mistaken. What I have witnessed is a streak of light going from above the treeline down to the treeline. Usually I only catch a...

    Deer Vertebrae?

Found out near Friendship ruins. Thanks guys!

I had heard the DEP did this in the early 80's but I was skeptical. August 4th 1981

I agree I don't think it ever happened. That being said, they have been sighted as far as Toms River (Winding River, near the site of the old Toms River Chemical Plant). When I went on a hike with a ranger at Bass River about 6 months back, she made mention of some reports coming in of one...

I had heard the DEP did this in the early 80's but I was skeptical. August 4th 1981

When I was a kid my neighbor talked about the (supposedly implemented) plan to release black cats to handle the deer population in the 1950s. I, too, was always skeptical about this story, but now wonder if it wasn't a misremembered/misreported retelling of this policy, or perhaps an earlier...

can you help me find these ruins?

Could definitely be, I'm not an expert by any means and relied on Google Image searches of various critter's vertebrae to attempt to rule out all the native stuff. Kind of defaulted to human. I'll post a picture somewhere appropriate.

can you help me find these ruins?

As a small aside, I was out there about a year ago and found what (appears) to be a human vertebrae. Very sun-polished and clearly having been out there for some time. Any indication there was ever a cemetery in the area?

    South Jersey Industrial History

Thanks for the replies TeeGate & Boyd! I do hope that I have chosen a broad enough topic so as to find sufficient materials. I came across: http://westjersey.org/sjh/sjh_chap_7.htm Which gives some insight in to the reasons for the fall of the bog iron industry (other than just depletion)...

    South Jersey Industrial History

Hey all- Long time lurker here. I am a graduate student at Drexel University in Philadelphia, working on a degree in Science, Technology and Society. It is, in essence, a degree in the history of science and technology. I have been tossing around a few ideas in my head about how I can...

    Bird I.D.?

    Bird I.D.?

I would very much like those plans, if you have them! My favorite visitors this season have been the occasional nuthatch and the (newly) abundant black-capped chickadee. Hummers here in Beachwood, as well.

    Bird I.D.?

Wow! Good call! Any idea how common they are in Ocean County? Do they nest here? The last few years I have been seeing a lot wider array of avian friends around my property.

    Bird I.D.?

Can anyone identify this visitor to my feeder? I initially thought it was a female ruby-throated hummingbird (I have one frequenting a feeder), but upon closer inspection of the picture I am thinking some kind of wren? http://www.flickr.com/photos/andrw/4984317437/
