    Where is Calico Ridge?

My dad used to take us there when we were kids. I can remember drinking water that was shooting up out a spring by a tree. Haven't been back until last summer when I was camping with a friend ( at Bodine ). I don't remember any campground there when I was a kid though.

    Hey Y'all

Hey, Long time, no post. I was having quite a bit of difficulty accessing the forum since last summer due to my browser. Well for my birthday, I got a laptop with windows 8, and now I have all the latest and no problem getting here. I am hoping to share my explorations. I missed being here...

Venus Fly Traps in the NJ Pine Barrens

They are native to NC which they grow in and their Zone is 8 and above. So it would be very hard for them establish here unless we consistently get zone 8 winters such as the one we just had. Most of the Pine Barrens are zone 6 unless your near the shore where its zone 7. Rave

Definately not Frostweed, but I would say possibly Oxalis, but I would have to see the leaves first to be sure. Raven

    Its a Frog Slog!

Oh OK, WOW, that's what I get for reading too fast. My bad. Anyway we were half way around the pond when we heard it and them more frogs, but that could very well have to do with the fact it was dark enough to be calling then. The Fringe tree is at Union and Bears Head, I had heard there was...

    Its a Frog Slog!

Guy, I believe thats true. for when we were out the other night, there was a Whip-poor-will that started calling and it was after that, that we heard the frogs really get going. I purchased the Dragonfly field guide from PPA at Lines on the Pines, its always in my car. Nice color photos with...

    Bitten by Tick?

I remember my first round with Lyme. I never had those flu-like symptoms, but I would sleep 14 hours a day in the heat. And had headaches in the back of my head and a very stiff neck. I had got to stage 3 before I had effective treatment. It is best that you catch it early as if it advances it...

    Bitten by Tick?

I have had Lyme 3 times, the first (and worst)in 1990. It took well over a year and two rounds of IV antibiotics for me to get straightened out, but when the second time came, I recognized the symptons right away and went to the doc and took care of it with Doxycycline. It can take up to 72...

    New Jerseys Remotest Spot

Al, That cabin is still used by the original owners. I know some of them and was fortunate to be able to camp there with them a few years back. Definately solitude but not too far removed from civilization. You can see and even hear all the folks fishing at Brigantine North end. I loved...

Organically grown native Pine Barrens and Shore plants for sale

Al, If you go with moss, you might just mist the areas down from time to time. That will help any spores that are present to germinate. As I said, my moss just shows up, mainly in nursery pots where I really don't want it. I yank it out and put it in the yard. I can save some for you if you want.

    Thousands of Red Admirals

I get hummers each summer also. I don't have a feeder either, but I have Coral Honeysuckle, Cardinal Flower, and Trumpet Creeper and impatiens in the window boxes, so that's what draws them in. The first one I ever saw I actually heard first. I was in the kitchen washing dishes when I heard this...
