    Pineys

Bob, I remember shaking Earl Haines' hand as a boy when my dad stopped by to visit. I believe he had airplane engines aloft to keep the frost off. I also met one of the principle PT-Boad designers at the Sweetwater Casino, but don't recall his name. I think it was Steve Eichinger who paid me $2...

    The bass river gazette

I still find "new" things I've overlooked, people I've forgotten, and recipes to try from the back issues of the Bass River Gazette. Take a look for yourself at: http://bassriver-nj.org/history/gazette-index.php Enjoy! :science:

    Pineys

My school bus was driven by a PATTEN. My lunches were prepared by a WILLS. My principal was an ALBOR. My teacher was an AUGUSTINE. My neighbor was an EICHENGER. My candy dealer was a SEARS. My classmates were FORDS and CARNEYS, SUTTONS, SOOYS and DEBOWS, HAGAMANS and CRAMERS. My clam dealer was...

    Christie: "Say no to us"

Well, we have a LOT of politics in our PINES. Unfortunately, our governors are totally spineless, be they Demicans or Republocrats. Who woulda' thought there was a place more corrupt than NJ? :bang:

    Vehicle for traveling sand roads

I didn't have much foldin' money back then in the pines - how much money could one make trapping muskrat and picking berries? Anyway, our trick was to fill the tires in my woodsbuggy (1961 Mercury Monterey) with water. We used an empty propane tank and an air compressor and the extra weight...

    Green Bank Inn

Curmudgeon, you're correct - I can't believe I called it that! I went to church just down the road for years, you'd think I'd remember correctly. The Lower Bank Inn was and still remains my personal favorite as I went to school with the late Marguerite Cramer, whose dad Will operated the place...

    Green Bank Inn

If you mean Allen's Clam Bar, that would be the New Gretna Inn, across from the Rustic Inn. The NGI burned down. The Bungalow Inn was closer to Egg Harbor Lake.

    Green Bank Inn

I'd not be surprised if The Bungalow Inn is long closed. I saw an article that the Rustic Inn in New Gretna will re-open, I'd like to go there again. With Allen's Clam Bar across the street, I'll have one foot in heaven!

    Green Bank Inn

A nice little place about halfway between the Lower Bank Inn and the Bungalow Inn. Just about grew up in these places in the '60s and early '70s. A nice town filled with nice folks. We even attended school in Shepherd's Hall for a couple of years when Green Bank Elementary got too big for its...

    Camping In Wharton?

If you like to have a beer or a glass of wine, put a padlock on your cooler so they need probable cause to make you open it. Alcholic beverages are prohibited in the forest, but us locals always found a way around it 'way back when. :clint:

    canoeing and camping

They're the WSF rangers doing surveillance, checking your canoe for alcoholic beverages. They'll be waiting at the next bridge to meet n' greet you!

History of Enduro racing in the Pines.

The Curly Fern Enduro is in like the 42nd or 43rd year of running now. Kind of cool to see a sanctioned race run through the woods near my house - but a little scary noticing that parts of the course were the creeks!

    Harrisville 35mm scans by Tplife

You're right, Bob, looking at the 1906 Egg Harbor/Mullica map, it looks more southwest. No mystery here, just follow the dirt road south and it will curve around to meet the river, more of a creek here. The swinging rope was gone the last time I was out there, glad to hear it's up again. Four...

    The Hut

Well, I think a minor can still sit on a barstool in NJ, can't do that here in Cali, but you can sit at a table by the bar (providing they sell food). But you can't drink & drive anymoore like the old days before the open container became illegal (extortion of highway money by the fed to change...

    The Hut

Well, I lived a little further south, so you'll understand my limitations. As the son of a serious socialite, I enjoyed a lot of activity warming barstools about the township. Our haunts were the Lower Bank Inn (through two owners, including Will's late daughter Marguerite who was a classmate...

Planning a kayaking & camping trip input needed

Campfires are only allowed only in fire rings in "approved" campsites. "Call ahead" suggests that there are fire rings at Lower forge. I recommend an alcohol stove and MSR fuel bottle with 200-proof benzene-free ethanol for cooking - it's the only way you'll legally get alcohol through the...

    Harrisville 35mm scans by Tplife

No, that's not correct. That's YOUR swimming hole. Mine is southeast of the ruins, that's all this Piney will say on the subject. Ed, the scanner is a Wolverine Film Scanner. I paid about $100 at Fry's electronics in SoCal. The shots were taken with an Argus C3 Rangefinder Camera using a...

Here are a couple of nice scans from Harrisville. Circa 1960, 35 mm Ektachrome. Nearly a stone's throw from my swimmin' hole.
