    An Extra Day Off

Ow, that looks painful...be careful out there. Any idea what species of snake that is? Beautiful coloring. I just watched this presentation on the 18 species of snakes in the pines a few weeks ago, but it's not immediately obvious to me which of these it could be. Looks like a juvenile and I'm...

    Deep Water Update

What's the most plausible scientific reason for there to be a hole that deep in the middle of a small creek? Or is this more common than I realize?

    Finding an Old Book

Oh, wow, this is amazing! Thank you so much for this post. It looks like this business exists for exactly what I'm trying to do. I will get in touch with them for sure. Can't thank you enough!

    Spring Landscapes

A few landscape selections from the past few months... Some neat textures in a sand quarry. Technically just outside the borders of the Pinelands National Reserve, but a familiar view from the top of a nearby hill. Maybe the best looking lighthouse in the state at the moment, while Old...

Tornado Watch for much of New Jersey until 7:00 PM

Same thing here - golf ball sized hail (and larger). My car got a couple of new dents. Luckily no broken glass though.

Meetup With Invisible Menace No Walk in the Pinelands Park

I have absolutely seen chiggers in the pines - at least, here in the Medford area. Or, what I always thought were chiggers. They're very very small, and bright red. I was bitten up pretty bad once, years ago. All over the ankles and the top of the feet. Some of the most incessant itching I've...

    A Sad Sight

I was out in the Speedwell side of the Parker Preserve early this morning, taking some pictures along the Wading. It was a great morning, the only detraction being clouds of mosquitoes and the green haze of pollen in the air. After that I made one more stop; I pulled into the parking lot at...

    Signs of Spring

Local flora from the past few months out in the field... Had to do some research here - these are called swamp beacons, Mitrula elegans:

    RAIN?

Not the greatest conditions for photography :/

    Pink to Pink

I would absolutely love to find some of these to photograph before they're gone - I know that window is quickly closing. There was a great episode all about pink (among other things) featuring NJCF biologist Emile DeVito on the most recent Pinelands Podcast, which is fantastic. Obviously I...

    Finding an Old Book

I checked out The Book Garden yesterday on the way back from Cars and Coffee up in Millstone. Unfortunately, they did not have a copy of Sign Posts, but it was still a great place to check out. The couple who owns the store were very friendly; one of them knew exactly what I was talking about...

    Finding an Old Book

Hahaha. How intriguingly vague. I assume someone either used OCR to scan the book into text, or maybe just typed it out by hand into a document. Still hoping for a physical copy somewhere out there, personally. I submitted a request to a local independent bookstore with a large NJ collection...

    Where is this?

Yep, that's more or less spot on. Here are some other photos of the Belco power plant ruins in the surrounding area. Worth checking out, for anyone who hasn't been. The boardwalk is fantastic and well-maintained; really makes a great walk through the ruins.

    Finding an Old Book

Interesting, where did you find a digital copy? The Open Library (Archive.org) has a digital copy of the 1955 book mentioned above, but not Sign Posts.

    Bingo!

    Where is this?

A certain spring. I think this is probably very easy. I did not drink the water, but I would be interested in taking a sample sometime and testing it, out of curiosity.

    Finding an Old Book

Fascinating! That's something to treasure. It does indeed look like you have Robert Blanchard's copy, and with a message and signature from the author, that's really something special. Thank you for posting the article snippets as well. I love the history and context.
