    Inaugural Monmouth Concours d' Elegance

Today was the first ever Concours d' Elegance held in Monmouth County, NJ. It was at Hop Brook Farm in Holmdel which seems to be a cross between a farm and a McMansion housing development. It's also across from the corporate headquarters of Vonage, which donated the use of their parking lots for...

    Garden Orb Weaver Spider

Anybody have any of these guys living on their property? We have one that's built quite an impressive web by my side door. The spider has to be the size of a quarter. It's the biggest spider I've ever seen apart from a tarantula. From what I've read, they're not poisonous, so I haven't...

    We're Back!

After what was the worst database crash I've ever seen we're back and running on a new server. The hard disk on the old one corrupted and unfortunately my backups were no good. Anybody who registered past May 6, 2008 will need to re-register their accounts. Knock on wood most of the posts...

    The Slag Thread

Gabe and I have been having some discussions about iron slag. There's furnace slag and there's forge slag. This article also talks about foundry slag. From what I've seen, there's two types of furnace slag. Slag that I've seen at Batsto, Hanover, and Federal Furnace (Lakehurst) looks like...

Discovery of artifacts halts road work in Franklin

http://www.app.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080830/NEWS/80830014 Just reading the comments, it's amazing to see the contempt that people in New Jersey have for their own history. The attitudes of the common New Jerseyan make me sick. All they care about are taxes and how close they are...

Batsto and Atsion: A Quick Saturday Adventure

My wife hasn't been feeling well, so I decided to take Dana out for the day. The destination was Batsto. Gas has gotten cheap enough where I don't feel guilty about making the drive, plus we had done Allaire the previous weekend. Somehow I always end up on the Parkway on the weekend. I've...

Small Then & Now: Allaire / Howell Iron Works

Here's a small then & now. I had to watch my daughter all day, so I took the day off of work and went to Allaire State Park. I took a bunch of photos, but here's some then and now's that people might like. I also got a small case of chiggers!!! They mow all of the grass there. Nobody is safe...

    New Feature: Post Tagging

Well, perhaps it's not such a new feature, but I have been lax in explaining it. When you create a new thread, you can now "tag" it. Tagging basically means you add some keywords to the post data and it will show up in the "tag cloud" on the bottom of the forum home page. For example, lets...

    Bourbon

Bourbon is my favorite drink after beer. I was introduced to it by a co-worker at a quaint New York City Bar. Here's an interesting article about how they make Makers Mark, my favorite bourbon. What's interesting to me is that the distillery is over 100 years old, and for the most part...

    Salters Mill Being Refurbished Again

Not quite Pine Barrens related, although this has to deal with Abe Lincoln's ancestors in Imlaystown, which Beck wrote about. http://www.app.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080619/NEWS01/806190553/1004

    Interesting new Beer Concoction

Tonight I made a black and purple: 1/2 raspberry lambic 1/2 Young's Double Chocolate Stout The problem is that the purple is so dark you have to hold it up to a light to see the separation from the stout. The taste is very, very good though. Fun to pour.
