This thread is a treasure. Hope you guys keep it up. I might slowly repair my botanical ignorance. Some really splendid pics in here.

    Get those snow shovels ready.....

Interesting. I don't put a lot of faith in any forecast longer than three to five days, but it does sort of feel like we could have that kind of year.

Beaver Dam to Batona Trail, 7-18-09

Anyone care to speculate about the holes in his shell? I wonder if they aren't from teeth, i.e. some animal got ahold of him by the rim and carried him around for a bit before deciding it wasn't worth it.

The Forks of the Mullica: A historian's tour

Great stuff, Gabe. That chunk of stove is beyond cool. Had to scrape my jaw off the desk. I remember Budd giving that same tutorial on identifying hand-made brick last summer :).

Yeah, being single would sure put the frosting on the cake. Just kidding, honey! Honey?

Beaver Dam to Batona Trail, 7-18-09

I had some unexpected free time open up this past Saturday, and since the last time that happened I went up to the Gap, I decided that I was overdue for a trip south. I'd been wanting to explore the area around Baptist Road and Long Causeway some more, and in the end I wound up meandering...

    found 2 very old trucks

Power Wagons, late 60's Broncos and IH Scouts, and old Willy's... I have an unnatural love for them all. Somewhere down there last weekend I saw a deuce-and-a-half for sale, looked like 70's vintage. You could open up a few overgrown roads with that bad boy.

Wading The Sleeper, And Other Interesting Places

Very neat trip, Guy. I don't think there's much doubt that those sandstone chunks came from a building right at, or very near, the location where you found them.

    Bamber Hunting Lodge

If he were really ambitious he would include the geneology of each grain back to the primordial rock from whence it crumbled.

False eyes, I'm betting, if you mean the ones on top :).

Nice shot, Guy! Really great timing on that one. Happy 4th everyone.

    Bridge Destroyed in Minutes

I was thinking exactly the same thing about that culvert. Wonder what made it heave up like that? The most striking image to me is the after shot, with the river peacably rolling along just as if those upstart humans had never tried to constrain it.

    Music for the day

Haha. Yeah, no hicks allowed up here in suburbandom. And our ticks are huge. Anyway, I grew up in Indiana, and they have you guys on the redness of their necks any day :). I'd love to hear a good banjo version of that tune, although I do really dig the way Tyminski and Block do it on acoustics.

Ha, that Mungo Jerry clip was awesome. Never saw it before. I think they should have miked that jug. And there's always time for John Sebastian.

Oswego Lake to Sim Place ... 2009

Thanks, 46er. The Raritan is one of the major rivers in this part of the state, and if it doesn't meet the navigability test I'd be shocked, as it is regularly canooed as well as kayaked and fished. I would guess the landowners are protecting the line where their properties meet the high water...

Oswego Lake to Sim Place ... 2009

I see "no fishing" signs in various places along the S. branch of the Raritan near my home. Mostly wealthy landowners along there. Large preserved "farms" (most grow grass, far as I can tell) and horse operations. The ordinary high water mark test seems pretty clear to me, and by the law those...
