A New Railroad Through the Pines [by a rather hostile and truculent reporter]

Common fare for the periodicals of the time, and a great read. Thanks for posting it, Jerseyman. He wasn't wrong about the road's prospects, at least. What's this method of spiking he refers to, where the spike goes through the rail and the chair? I'm trying to visualize it, and assume that...

Maybe the water is being retained upstream for some reason.

    Day of the Tiki Heads

If I was tripping I'm pretty sure I would have made some more to go with the existing collection :). There was plenty of clay on the bank.

    Day of the Tiki Heads

Imagine yourself wandering aimlessly along the sandy trails that frame the Mullica's descent past Atsion and Batsto to the sea. Beguiled by the soft soughing of the breeze in the pines, and lulled into a false sense of security by the gentle, surging flow of the oily brown waters at your feet...

    Oswego Run 5-16

We drove along the Mullica today from Atsion to the junction with the Sleeper Branch, via Sleepy Creek Rd., and then came back up Sleeper Branch Rd. The Mullica seemed high and fast, and there was a very strong flow from the Sleeper and smaller tribs as well. Both roads were under water in many...

    Exploring Hampton Gate Woods Again

I'm surprised that the first person to see that flower didn't name it the Scrotum Blossum. Nice pics, as always :).

    Hampton Furnace trashed

Hahaha, oh man. That guy is a piece of work.

    Hampton Furnace trashed

Or maybe they bagged up after a party... although I would think a party in that site would get busted pretty quickly.

    Hampton Furnace trashed

God. Well at least it's mostly bagged. Is that the furnace area, or up by the packing house site? Anyway, idiots, as usual. Almost seems silly to mention anymore, doesn't it? Like saying "damn rain."

Evesham, Atsion, The Forks, Tuckerton, Tucker’s Beach, and Long Beach Island in 1823

Well now I feel better, because I wouldn't have gotten that in a year of trying.

Old, old bog on the Batsto

Very cool, Jeff. A hidden gem for sure.

    Extended Camping in the Pines

The cabins at Atsion lake make a pretty comfortable and cheap base camp for exploration of the pines.

Evesham, Atsion, The Forks, Tuckerton, Tucker’s Beach, and Long Beach Island in 1823

Darn, thought I had it. I've read about the Franklin part of the story as well, Jerseyman, but didn't know there was no evidence to support it. Bobpbx, I think that's exactly what he meant.

Evesham, Atsion, The Forks, Tuckerton, Tucker’s Beach, and Long Beach Island in 1823

Hmm... Abraham Browning, Centennial Exhibition, Phila. 1876, said of New Jersey that it was like a great barrel filled with good things to eat, and open at both ends. He is credited with calling us the "Garden State" for the first time.

? About Difference in NJ Stones

This comes up every now and then, and I think the consensus is that sandstone and "ironstone" or "bog iron" are essentially the same thing, save that the orange version has more iron in it.

Evesham, Atsion, The Forks, Tuckerton, Tucker’s Beach, and Long Beach Island in 1823

That is really spectacular stuff, Jerseyman! There are so many striking points in the text that there's no way I can touch on them all. The first sentence that jumped out at me was this one... "I could thus have a very good conception of how the country looked in the hands of the aborigines...

Great Swamp Branch & Nescohague Creek, A PBX Hike

Great picture of the turtle. Looks like you guys made a full day of it. I had arms like that last summer after struggling through an old graveyard in 90+ degrees of damp. Not fun.

I think if you tried that hole in the winter it would be like driving your truck on a frozen lake :).

    Interesting firearms stuff

I hear what you're saying. It's important to note, though, that the "National" Guard is a state controlled force. The Feds have to ask the governors for those troops, don't they? In any event, I think it's clear that when the founders wrote the clause they meant "every free man has a right to...
