Childhood shift: Most kids have stopped playing outdoors

I'm not sure where I stand on this as far as parenting goes. I grew up in an inner city setting where the only "woods" we had was in abandoned houses. This was well before there was such a thing as crack houses. When mom and dad took us out of the city to Brooklawn, I learned to love the...

    restricted areas ?

Please keep it civil To all, This thread started as a good question about exploring the pine plains. Can we keep it as just that? No more "that guy" and, similar sarcastic retorts. I don't know any of you gentlemen to my knowledge, and if we ever cross paths in the pines I would prefer it to be...

    On the trail of...

How big was the snapper? There wasn't a reference for size in the picture, just curious. My favorite picture of my wife is when she was moving baby snappers off a road and I took her picture with one in the palm of her hand. Wasn't big enough to do any damage yet. :) Enjoyed the pictures. Greg

    Bear population spreads across NJ

That's why I haven't seen bears in the pines, I have to hike in downtown Egg Harbor city. :)

    Bear population spreads across NJ

I don't know. I've been to VA, WV and NY hiking and have seen how bears mark their teritory (I'm guessing thats what it was). They basically claw trees and shread them, you can't miss it. I've never seen this anywhere I've been in the pines. If they are in the pines they must be extremely...

    Exploring the lower Sleeper

Not sure of the exact location of the pilings. I'm not really familiar with this area, it was my first time to wander back there. I had checked it on google before hand, but as Jeff said the canopy is so thick the areials didn't show much. The sand islands were beauties (Jeff had a picture of...

Hiked the Batona with Kaia :)

As long as a fire was allowed my favorite was to freeze some keilbasa and cook it over the fire on a stick. Fine dining!

    Exploring the lower Sleeper

Jeff, Tom and I saw that swamp maple (pretty sure it was the same one). We also saw some huge cedar trees. At on point we saw the remains of rotted pilings in the water, mostly below the surface. Always makes me dream of what it looked like back in the day. Next time I'll have my camera. BTW...

    Attention NJ Forest Fire Service

Bob, They did something similar at Winslow WMA a few years back, except it was an existing trail/road that they widened (destroyed). Left all the dead trees shreaded on the road side. Within 2 weeks there was a new pile of construction trash. It created a new dumping ground. The latest was 2...

    Mystery Line in the Pines

OK, I am blind. When I looked at historical aerials for 1970 I didn't see it. When I clicked between 1963 and 1970 it was very clear in 1970, and not there in 1963 (I can also see it on GE now). Look's interesting, thanks for posting. Greg

    Closed to Mortorized Vehicles

My 2 kids worked summer camps for disabled people (kids and adults) for ten years, and my wife was one of the cooks for 20 years. We count many of the campers as freinds. My son took them camping to let them enjoy the woods. Thank you Guy and Ben for deleting those post's. Greg

    Facebook Too Big?

The thing to me about using or not using technology is where do I draw the line? I only recently started a facebook account, at the teasing of my wife and kids. I've since got in touch with many friends I have't seen since the 70's. I had dinner last week with someone I haven't seen since 1970...

Pine Barrens Enthusiast Is the Genuine Article

My brother Bud also had a "secret spot" he took me to only once .He passed away in 1997. I've tried and tried and can't find it. It's fun looking for it though. If I ever find it, I'll certainly post pictures, although not the location :) Greg

Hey Furball, When will you be up in these parts again? Tom and I have a couple of spots we'd like to walk to, if the 2 of us can get healthy at the same time!
