Batsto Country Living Fair 2011 is Cancelled

I took a trip to the cutoff part of Batsto to see what the damage was like to Constables Bridge. It looked like that bridge was washed out on either side and they've since fixed it. Rockwood is still washed out pretty good. I agree, we really didn't see too much damage here in South Jersey...

Batsto Country Living Fair 2011 is Cancelled

It is a shame so much was destroyed in that storm and now so many events are suffering from it. Right now the only way to get in between those two Rt. 542 bridges at Batsto is to drive from Quaker Bridge or walk. It seems like they will be closed for a while as I haven't seen any work going on...

    Storm Stories

Wow Gipsie, sorry to hear about that. Luckily we were fortunate where we lived with minor blow-downs and slight flooding. I actually took a ride out on Sunday to check the flood levels. I guess I should have went out on Monday instead as I hear it got about 1-2 feet higher in places from when I...

Drawbridge portion of Beesleys Point Bridge to be torn down

Wow, thanks for that link. What a shame. I guess this bridge might meet the same fate as the Rt. 9 Bridge over the Mullica? I don't know if I ever read how that one disappeared. I took a trip out to the Great Egg bridge a couple times in the past couple of years. Seems like a great place to fish...

    Lots of Rain

Took the long way home today to check out the Great Egg Harbor River. It wasn't over the Black Horse Pike crossing but it was close. There were cones placed so I'm guessing the level had gone down a little bit. I didn't get to check Weymouth. 8th Ave and Mays Landing Rd. were both closed and I...

    Lots of Rain

Wow Whippoorbill, those photos are incredible. I was just checking around online at the USGS gauges and the Maurice River gauge is off the charts right now. Great Egg Harbor is also pretty high as well taking on all the flooding that Collins Lakes and Hammonton got. Me and a couple friends were...

    Forest Fires and Survival

Thanks for the tips guys. The lowest ground possible, a lake or swamp, or getting to ground that is already burned sounds good to me. At least there is a lot of water in most areas of the pines. Having water and or "other refreshments" would be a nice bonus as well. Just something I figured I'd...

    Forest Fires and Survival

A little while back I decided to take a drive through the pines on my way home from Batsto to Atsion on what seemed like a nice calm sunny evening. I took the road up the west side of the Batsto and then cut over to the east side of the Mullica/Atsion. The wind quickly started picking up and by...

    Odd slag findings at Martha

Guy, do you know what the builders are doing back there? New bridge?

Dr. Smith's Neutral Water Health Resort

Here is a shot of the Sanitarium that Dr. Smith operated with the serpentine Landing Creek in the foreground. That roundhouse is indeed a treasure trove of history. We used to visit my friends grandfather and his wife (Hesse's) all the time. There's a great old book in there that has almost...

Apple Pie Hill Tower Smashed Again

Yeah, I stopped sometime in late April and saw it. I think it's a good thing, and there was definitely less trash around when I stopped there. The view, as always, was great from the top. I just parked right in front of the gate when I went. I noticed the tower looked like it had been painted...

    Odd slag findings at Martha

Guy, that is the spot. As for the road improvements, I thought it was funny that they closed that bridge I guess because the pilings were rotting out underneath, and then to improve the road they drove the backhoe over it. At least according to the tire tracks I found left on either side. And...

    Odd slag findings at Martha

Well, it's definitely a weird situation. There is glassine slag coming from what seems to be out from underneath of it. It also does not have any sand or stone imbedded in the material itself, unlike every type of sandstone or ore I've seen before. I don't think that would be there if this thing...

    Odd slag findings at Martha

Here's two shots of what looks like the outer edge of the wheel right on the edge of the river. The edge is shattered & decayed a bit but it definitely has a near perfect curve to it with what looks like it could be a 5-7 foot diameter. Close. Further away.

    Odd slag findings at Martha

Gabe, that's not the spot. It's actually at the top of the huge beach/clearing in that photo. I have a chance to check it out after work tomorrow if it doesn't rain. I'll try and take some shots and closeups, although this last storm really brought the water levels up quite a bit. It could be a...

    Indian Cabin

Just saw this old thread and I'm bringing it back from the dead! Lol I lived off of Indian Cabin Rd. for most of my life and loved the history behind it. I think I remember reading it was a stage route from Batsto to Smithville back in the day. I knew it's path from the dead end triangle in...

    Odd slag findings at Martha

So a while back while kayaking the Oswego with some friends, I noticed there was some odd slag underneath the water at the 90 degree beach just South West of the old dam site. This can be accessed by the road that leads from the furnace site to the unused bridge over the Oswego River (Batona...

The bridge on Atison Basto Rd has been washed out and the road is closed, just a FYI

I know I checked out that road in April of 2010 and it was washed out pretty bad, and seemed to get worse in June of 2010. Later in the summer I noticed the pipe was starting to get damaged from people trying to drive over it. It looked as though their transfer cases were piercing through it and...

    Paper Maps

Thanks for the replies guys. I think I will try the Batsto info center first, and then some of those web sites. I think I confused the USGS Topo and WMA maps, and really I'm only looking for the USGS Topo maps, but it has to be paper. I'm not big with sitting in front of a computer zooming in...

    Paper Maps

Not sure if this is the spot for this question, so feel free to move it if needed. I saw the frequently asked question area about the wildlife management area maps. Those are what I am looking for but I'm having trouble finding a place to purchase the paper versions. Would anyone know of a good...
