Pine plains on 539 after the fire

Thanks ! Boyd, I detoured out to the area on the map you posted on Friday on my way to fish Harrisville Lake, and parked at one of the high spots on the dirt road. It was pretty amazing to say the least. I hiked straight for the hill in the distance (Bear Swamp?) for about an hour and then...

    Living with Lyme

Wow, after reading that article, I'm reminded again how fortunate I was. I had Lymes in 1990 and was lucky enough to have a doctor who admitted he was stumped and called a Rheumatoid Specialist. I took medicine for 3 months, not 2-4 weeks as is common, and have been fully recovered since then. I...

    Build new instead of buy?

My wife and I didn't build our own house, we went the existing house route, but our friends built their own and here is a brief list of things they dealt with: Depending on the locality you buy your land in, your permits may take a long time to obtain (our friends-over 2 years). If you do work...

Pine plains on 539 after the fire

You can park on the shoulder of 539, or if your car can handle it there are several spots along that sand road headed Southwest. I have a 2WD Escape with mud & snow tires. It does ok as long as the sand isn't too deep. Thanks for the info, and the pictures have been great.

Pine plains on 539 after the fire

I have this Friday off and will be driving to the fire area. Is the best place to park and take a walk on 539? I will be coming down rt 72 from 532. Thanks.

Some pictures in the Pine Barrens

Cedar Waxwings like to eat berrys. We have a flowering crab apple tree in our yard where the "apples" are the size of a cranberry. We get a lot of Waxwings when the berrys are out in the fall. My wife and I always watch for them.

    Decline in crows?

I haven't seen any crows at my feeders but I don't usually see too many of them anyway. I am seeing a lot of the big grackles, as well as the usual cardinals, chickadees, juncos and finches, but no blue jays. Also this is the first year we had humming birds at our feeders in April. They don't...

    A Simpson's Sky

For me the clear, bright blue sky type days are tough fishing days, but this year for some reason all the days have been tough. But it still beats a day at work.

    Permethrin...impossible to find in stores

Jungle? And to think Dee and I thought the Adirondacks last summer were adventurous:) .

Big sink hole at Hampton Furnace

I was out there on Sunday afternoon on my mountain bike and it was very smooth, very easy to ride on. I hope it stays that way for awhile.

    Permethrin...impossible to find in stores

That's interesting. We used to make fun of my oldest brother when we hiked, because we would all put on the same deet based product (Cutter, I think) and it worked for us, but he was like a tick magnet. If Permethrin is applied to clothing and not to skin, should it work the same for everyone...

What dangerous animals live in the pines?

Wow, point taken. Do you use anything or just check yourself when out? I know someone who just stays out of the woods until first frost, but I don't think I want to go that route. I usually try to stay in my canoe during the summer and be very careful when I get out, but the year I got Lymes I...

What dangerous animals live in the pines?

One case of Lymes (1990) for me is plenty, I'll take my chances using some type of repelent. Deet works ok for me, but I don't like reapplying it (from swimming or sweat). I've never used Permethrin. I think I'll give it a try.

A lot of strikes but no fish. So far this year the pickerel are making a fool of me :) . I've lost more fish, and had more soft plastic artificials bitten in half than I can remember.

    Parker Preserve Access Article

Jeff, I usually canoe, but my plan for Friday was to bank fish with live bait as I'm a little hobbled with a sore hip. Friday was an on and off monsoon at Chatsworth so I skipped the live bait, took my waders and rain poncho and waded. I actually got about 2 hours between the really hard rain to...

    Parker Preserve Access Article

Thanks Jeff, appreciate the info. I'll probably try both places and see how it goes. With or with out live bait I'm sure it'll beat a day at work. I'm also bringing a spotting scope. 2 weeks ago I was at the lake and there were a lot of wading birds fishing the lake.

Fishing Chatsworth at Lake I have this friday off and may fish at the lake. Does anyone know where I can buy live minnows near there? I'll be coming from the Batsto area (542 to 563 into Chatsworth). The guy near me doesn't have live bait until may. Thanks
