Oji, just for clarification we don't have coral snakes in NJ...I think that is what you were inferring with you rare comment.

Navy restores cedar stands in old cranberry bogs....

Bob, have you seen those bogs at Lakehurst? I'm not really sure why they do those fox hole things but I really know little when it comes to plants, hydrology, and that sort of thing.

Navy restores cedar stands in old cranberry bogs....

I'm sure this will get a mixed reaction from people on this site. But I really like this effort....but then again I love the solitude of a dense cedar swamp.

Some pics from the past year

Largo, I don't actually get that close. I have a macro lense so I can get close ups but took many of those shots from a pretty safe distance. Timber rattlesnake are actually quite misunderstood.....all the ones I've encountered are quite relaxed and if you give them respect your fine......its...

Some pics from the past year

Guys thank for the compliments. Gipsie, if you find it on private property which is threatened by development than I would report it. If you find it in the outskirts of the barrens say atlantic, cumberland counties then I would report it as they are much more rare if not extirpated from...

Some pics from the past year

Here are some reptiles and amphibs from this past year. Figured winter time would be a good time to post them, Eastern Hognose, Northern pinesnake, Snapper laying eggs, Eastern box(male) Ringnecks hatching in the field, clutch of eastern kingsnakes, adult...

    Turtle hunter

Al, best way to hold them is by grabbing them behind their head under their shell, and like you said keep the head down with your knuckles. With that said I usually don't pick the big bastards up unless I gotta get them across a road. Pushing them along with your foot normally works, although...

    Turtle hunter

    Turtle hunter

When my dad was stationed at Lakehurst a buddy of his got chomped on by a big snapper at those ponds you see on rt.70 across from that RC car place. The guy had to have his toe amputated as a result. Didn't watch the video yet I will. But I'm guessing this guy is catching snappers to sell for...

    Old south Jersey photos

Wasn't lindenwold a big vacationing area back in the day? I know my brother in laws grandmom grew up there and she always talks about how it was like the pine barrens there and very unpopulated. Wow things have changed(no knock on lindewold) but wow things are different today....ashame.

Thoughts on ATV use in New Jersey.

I would say a park not in NJ to be honest. The southern reaches of this state are equally fought for as the pine barrens by environmental groups. Lots of crucial areas along the Atlantic Flyway down there, and lots of endangered species.

Thoughts on ATV use in New Jersey.

You will find that many of the people that have power in this state concerning environmental issues don't partake in forums like this. As Ben stated sites like this and others have no pull at all when it comes to issues like we are discussing. If you want to get action done you really have to...

Thoughts on ATV use in New Jersey.

Mudboy, maybe the letter was something about his property being rezoned?? If it lies in atlantic county and is 900+ acres along the gsp then this would be highly coveted land by land conservation organizations I would think. They are trying to preserve the Elwood Corridor. I'm sure a land...

Thoughts on ATV use in New Jersey.

Not really sure what to make about that. Getting a letter saying something about 'preserved land' sounds odd at best. If your buddies land was preserved he would know about it, a land preservation organization would have had to pay him if he owned it, or buy it from him. Sounds like there is...

Thoughts on ATV use in New Jersey.

Dave, here is the deal, I don't really know the whole story with your friend. Was the land preserved? Which means he was paid for the land, right? If he has 900 acres and the state bought it I'm sure he got paid ok?

Thoughts on ATV use in New Jersey.

Mudboy, I read all the text you have lots of good points. Here is the one major issue in this state. You have a 1 million acre forest that is extremely rare in the world, with loads of rare species only found here, THIS PLACE IS TRUELY SPECIAL, MANY PEOPLE DON'T REALIZE THIS and take it for...

Thoughts on ATV use in New Jersey.

Dude you are why your group gets no respect because of attitudes like you. No I'm not a ranger, and I'll defend orv use alot of times. What do you know about nature, I know those trees knocked down are serving a very good purpose at provide birthing habitat for several endangered species...

Thoughts on ATV use in New Jersey.

Just a fyi what they are doing at the old chatsworth park is for a couple reasons, the downed trees serve a purpose for a endangered species. The park was destroyed because that area isn't patrolled by Conservation officers so they wanted to eliminate the urge riders may have to go there, which...
