I used to go out there 20 years ago. People would always bring stolen cars there to roll into the lake or burn. It would have made for a magnificent ORV park though but Hovnanian really wanted/wants to build a megadevelopment there.

Yep. That Fagan is the one who had the cave near Farmingdale mentioned in chapter 22 of More Forgotten Towns of Southern NJ. It also more or less retells that story. The cave would have been somewhere in this area...

If they were archaeological test pits they'd typically only be one square meter. Since it doesn't look like that area has ever been used for anything industrial they could have been looking for Lenape stuff. I sort of doubt it though. Here's the spot on the Cook(?) topo. I've always wondered...

The Park Police should have someone search for "Pine Barrens" in Youtube and nail all of the people that are stupid enough to film themselves breaking the law.

To be fair, the state isn't using dollars, tax or otherwise, to maintain much of anything in the forest. Imagine if the state had an aggressive policy of filling in the giant mud holes and ruts in the roads in the Pines. Driving around would probably be much more boring to people that want to...
