    NJPB Live Maps Important Update

Yeah, myTopo changed how you access the maps. I'm not sure if I'll be able to get it working again. I just am not a programmer. Worst case scenario we can switch back to the NJ WMS server for the topos. It will be slow and not great, but better than nothing.

Help with a face and a place

Looks way too nice/large to be a forge in the pines. Is that some kind of elevator?

    Facebook Too Big?

I'm picturing all of you as old men (and women) sitting on a porch in your rocking chairs complaining about "young kids these days." It's not so hard to picture, actually. :)

    The NEW Beer Thread

The wagon carrying the Diet Coke and O'Dulls. Just 'till my birthday, and then we'll see how I feel after that. Alcohol has not done me any favors.

    The NEW Beer Thread

There's got to be something about being in the Pines and beer. I was craving some Miller High Lifes after I got back from Mary Ann Forge. None for me, though, I'm on the wagon.

    Poking around Mary Ann Forge

Gabe, let's try to time it on a day that we can get back there together. Thanks!

Well, if they wanted to use the mill pond for the bogs they would have needed to drain it. Maybe that's why the road over the dam dips down where the channel is. They needed to get a good amount of water out of there, more than what the raceway to where the mill wheel was, so it would make sense...

All of the bogs were upstream of the dam. I don't know why they'd dig a whole new channel for the bog when they could just reuse the one for the forge, if that is what they ended up doing.

    Stop That Jade Run

I've heard both the indentured servant and horse theories. Bisbee has this to say about the stream in his book Signposts: STOP THE JADE RUN - Stream rises northwest of Ong's Hat in Pemberton Township and flows west as part of township line with Southampton passing Buddtown, then turns west...

Hrm, let me build on this before I sound too negative. I'm sure there's someone good out there and that I'll find her when the time is right. Anyway, back to chatting about the Pines... ;)

Interesting. That mill in Austria was built in 1802, which makes it older than Mary Ann. I'm wondering if the spot that I have marked as "depression" is the forge site. I've poked around it before but haven't found any brick. Yesterday I was starting to think that it was just a spot that was...

Well, turbine mills seem pretty rare in these parts. The only one I know of is the grist mill at Walnsford. As far as wheel driven mills, the water is carried to the wheel from a sluice (or in the case of Howell Works, pipes) and then let go either at the top of the wheel (overshot), in the...

    Bullock/Pasadena/Mount Misery/Vandalism

Well, in my case I'm hoping it's "temporarily bad times" that lead to much better ones. Being single is better than being married to who I was married to. The problem is finding someone who's reasonably well put together in their 30s and single. I have met a seemingly non stop stream of...

The south side, closer to Mount Misery Road? Yes, I think you're right. I spent most of my time on the north side, by the dam. My map doesn't go into that detail. ;)

All: So, if you haven't read Jerseyman's post on Mary Ann Forge yet, you should read it before you continue on with this post. Done? Great. Let's go. I decided to take a trip there today. The area around the dam doesn't make a whole lot of sense - so I wanted to try (again) to make heads or...
