    NJPB Live Maps Important Update

All: I've just updated NJPB Live Maps to use the MyTopo layers as opposed to the Topo layers offered by Terraserver. Topos should be a little faster and better quality now. This will be the last update I do to NJPB Live Maps. There's a new Google Maps version out (version 3) that is a lot...

    Wanted: Mountain/Hybrid Bike

Most of my ride will be through the Princeton campus which has very few cars.

    Wanted: Mountain/Hybrid Bike

Actually I'm going to need to get a rack for the rear, and some pannier bags to put my laptop in when I ride it to work.

I bought one at Target already!

    Wanted: Mountain/Hybrid Bike

Sounds like they did a bad job of fitting you for the bike. That's one of the reasons why I didn't want to buy at a department store. I ended up buying a 1997 Trek 730 off of Craigslist. I overpaid for it, but it was the bike that I wanted. Now, to accessorize!

    Wanted: Mountain/Hybrid Bike

There's two big local bike shops in Princeton. Their used selection kind of sucks, though. However I'll be using them for tune ups and parts.

    Wanted: Mountain/Hybrid Bike

One of the first things I'm going to do with my bike (if I can find one) is go to the local bike store and pay for a tune up. I also think a nice Brooks saddle is in my future.

    Wanted: Mountain/Hybrid Bike

I'm looking at something like a used Trek 730. It's from the mid 90s. I think that may have pre-dated their Chinese factory. I'm looking in the under $300 range.

    Wanted: Mountain/Hybrid Bike

Well, I'm saying something better than the quality of the X-mart bikes, but not super high end. So Trek seems to be a nice middle ground to start with. I'm trying to find a used bike. Kopps Cycle in Princeton had a grand total of four adult used bikes chained up on the side of their building...

    Wanted: Mountain/Hybrid Bike

Yeah. When I first started looking I found a gorgeous bike on Target's website, but after doing some research I'm leaning towards trying to find a used Trek.

    john mcphees, the pine barrens

No, it's long out of print. You want the one with the brown cover, not the one with the white. The white cover one is just the John McPhee book minus the photographs. I know who you're talking about. Bill W. (too lazy to look up the proper spelling.) He doesn't post, but he lives in Woodmansie...

can you help me find these ruins?

The water tower on Savoy Blvd was part of the old Pioneer Smelting plant. I took a few pics in 2004 before they tore down the buildings: http://gallery.njpinebarrens.com/showgallery.php/cat/514

Yes. You should be able to find a used copy on Amazon though.

In my quest to be less of a lard-ass I want to get a bike. Anybody have an old mountain/hybrid bike for sale?

    Odd slag findings at Martha

Large chunks of iron, or mis-cast pieces would just be melted back down in the furnace.

    From Crosswicks to Walnford

Walnford has a lot of programs and things that I think folks here would enjoy. Every so often they fire up the grist mill for a behind the scenes demonstration of how it works. I'm probably going to try to arrange for something for NJPB members.
