    The migration has begun....

Thanks! I will enjoy reading about the banding. It will help explain some of the things I have been seeing along the coast and further inland.

    The migration has begun....

46er, would you happen to know if there is any significance to a double band around the leg of a Peregrine Falcon in the Great Bay area? I came across a mature bird and it had both a green and a black band on its one leg. I was just curious to why it would have two. (The falcon was perched on...

    End of the Summer :(

The Summer may be ending but another favorite season is coming up. Who doesn't like the Fall in the pines? Cooler temperatures, the foliage changes, Gentians bloom, no flies.....:) Sarra, your canoe photograph reminds me of fish lined up in ice at the fishmonger.

    Lots of rain here today

I was out in the Plains and it was raining for most of the morning and afternoon. Several times it rained so hard I began to question why I was out. In the end, I didn't mind so much except the flies managed to stay with me between the drops. It was still better than being at work or in the house.

Is it possible to be immune to chiggers?

Badfish, you haven't tried hard enough. Last Saturday I was out with Dragoncjo all day and did they ever make a meal out of me. For some reason the bites don't make me itch any more, but I look like I was hit with #8 shot from the waist down. Don't sit in the tall grass while waiting to see...

    Martha furnace question

If you travel deeper into Bass River from Martha, it is as wild as the Pine Barrens get. There are pristine untouched wild areas that give the feeling of being somewhere else other than New Jersey. I am very fond of of that area and have no problem getting "lost"all day exploring the pine...

    Space Station

If you go out into the East Plains early in the morning you can track satellites and spacecraft easily. They can be seen with the naked eye. I saw the space shuttle pass overhead years ago. If I happen to be out in the area, these are the two sources I use for the ISS. I don't know of a source...

    Colliers Mills etc.

DJ- You can get to Success Lake with ease from either Rt 571 or Hawkins Road. There is some sugar sand at the intersection near the lake but if you stay to the side it isn't a problem. Last year the state graded and added stone to sections of Success Road from Rt 571 to the lake proper. I can...

    #^$%@%!* chiggers!

Boyd, I always have chigger bites somewhere on my body. They have been even worse now that I have been spending more time in damp grassy areas. I get strange looks from people when I am in flip flops and not wearing my field boots. The probably think I am a junkie of some sort from all of the...

    "Finding Bigfoot" in a rut

I would normally agree with your statement Manu, but today I crossed paths with a Raccoon that was the meanest, nastiest thing in the woods. I high-tailed it up Quakerbridge Road before it had any chance of getting close to me. I have my suspicions it was suffering from Rabies - a drunk like...

    "STOP IT"

I can't believe that woman approached that adult bear that closely! What was going through her mind. especially after they were fighting. She will be a statistic.

The light breeze coming up the coast and through the bay was nice last night.

    Perseid meteor shower 8/12-/13

Warren Grove and the point at Great Bay were clouded in last night. Even though there were only a few windows of clear sky, you could still catch one of the Perseids blazing through the night sky, leaving a bright streak. Some left visible vapor trails that could be seen for a few seconds. After...

    Boyd's map legend question

Badfish, if you take a look at the Historic Aerial topos you can see sometime between 1943 and 1955 the pond appears. The road may have caused the pond to develop or become more pronounced.
