    Botany

I was walking through Penn this afternoon and found the Deer flies to be relentless. Even with a hat and towel on my neck, I left after a short time, worn from their circling attack. Pickering's are blooming and the fringed and crested orchids will fully bloom shortly.

    Bog Iron

I can remember, when I was a lad in the 70s, seeing fresh water flowing out of the ground in many locations. One such spring was by Barnegat. The fresh water would spurt out of the ground two or three feet high. Not any more!

    Insect nest?

I came across this beauty this afternoon while chatting with Dragoncjo. Anyone know what the name of this very large caterpillar may be? It was traveling out in the open so I suspect it may be able to sting or is toxic.

We're taking more pictures than ever ... so why are cameras dying off?

The brains behind Flickr revamped their format because they also think point and shoots are dead. They also think that professional photographers don't exist anymore.

    NY, New England Vacation Ideas?

Ben, even though you specified NY or New England, have you considered heading in the opposite direction. The Blue Ridge Mountains in West Virginia are very beautiful in the Fall.

Favorite place in the Pine Barrens

My favorite place to be in the pines, this past sweltering holiday weekend, was sitting in cedar water cooling off waiting for the temperatures to drop again so we could go back out again on our adventures. A stone or sand bottom is preferred but any will do when the ground temps get over a...

Any Tips for Removing Pine Sap from a Vehicle's Finish?

I almost came to terms with the marks being permanent after getting mixed results from all of the tips, but I am not one to give up. The marks all over the white hood bothered me, so I dug out the the buffer with a sponge pad. After about an hour of cutting the paint with 3M 3000 compound and...

Any Tips for Removing Pine Sap from a Vehicle's Finish?

I recently just purchased a car from Mays Landing and it has some old sap on the hood that I can't seem to remove with the usual bottled cleaners or polishes. Other than wet sanding the clear coat with ultra fine sand paper, does anyone know a tip on how I could remove the spots? I know those of...

    NJ MV Stinks

I must say that MV did an astounding job Saturday. I was in and out of the Egg Harbor office in about ten minutes, including filling out the paper work for both title and tags. The staff may wanted to leave on time and that could have been why things were running so efficient. The registration...

    Storms headed our way again

It thundered nonstop for about an hour an a half. I haven't heard that much noise from a storm in quite a long time. The thunderhead I saw was in the northern most part of Burlington. Very impressive to see, but I had the crew in the trucks to be safe. I didn't want anyone to be exposed if and...

    Hi,Am New Here!!

Boyd, did YouTube or yourself want to run an ad with the video. They will drop a video if there is a copyright issue of any kind. Something as simple as a tiny visible label will trigger policing. I have been flagged doing Google+ chats because of a case of Coke was used in a video someone had...

    Botany

Any guesses to what orchid this may be? I came across three examples of this plant several weeks ago and I think it may be Plantanthera lacera. They are very tall now, almost to my knee. All are in the Inner Coastal Plain just outside the Pine's proper.

Doug, was the arrow pointing at the sunrise intentional? If it was deliberate, that detail is a very nice touch!

Logging in the Pinelands Just a vote away....

The Pinelands thrive on disturbance and fire. We have all seen the beauty that emerges from the opened or burned earth. What needs to be done before any logging takes place, is the disclosure of the location to the public, so that if the area is sensitive historically or environmentally, the...
