From this point on, if I ever get stuck and someone stops to help me out, I am going to ask first if their name is Jeff. :D

For those interested in the State Forests at the other end of NJ

Does the Rock Cores Trail still exist? Over the years, I have come across and been shown a few poorly sealed bore holes on the Jersey side and dropped rocks down them counting away the seconds to see if I could hear the thud or a splash of them hitting the bottom. I was trying to gauge the...

For those interested in the State Forests at the other end of NJ

My friends and I have explored many of the old mines in northern New Jersey. The New Jersey DEP has an extensive list of defunct mines and their locations in the archives. I have squeezed into some tight spaces exploring old mines. The worst mine I have ever been in I think was used for testing...

Trip report: Pilgrim Lake Campground and Bass River SF exploring

The Batona trail shares its route with several roads. Calico Road, just up from the failing bridge you were hanging out at, is such a partnership. If the road is named on the USGS and doesn't have a road closed to vehicular traffic sign posted you haven't a worry. I wouldn't worry about where...

Trip report: Pilgrim Lake Campground and Bass River SF exploring

There is a section of the Batona Trail that passes through where you were swimming. You may have noticed the pink blaze on the trees in the area. Don't pay any mind to dirty looks when you are having fun. My friends and I get mean stares some times accompanied by a few choice words. Some...

    One Sweet Bog

I thought those were the bogs down the road from Friendship. Anyhoo, I can still hear the croaking coming from the frogs hidden in those lilies.

Goats to defend NJ historic site from poison ivy

Ben, glyphosate is a compound so tightly attracted and bonding to soil that there is no need to fear it leaching in water ways. If any does happen to get sprayed into any water, the compound will strongly be absorbed by any suspended organic or mineral matter and then broken down by...

Goats to defend NJ historic site from poison ivy

The goats will probably spread the poison ivy. A better solution would be to tank mix Round-up with Scythe and add a pre emergent to control new growth. I usually use my loppers to cut a section out of the base of the ivy and then spray the opened section of plant. After a few days the rest of...

Bass River State Forest road questions

Given the amount of rain some of the areas have received in the last few weeks most of the roads are on the dryer side and are easily passed by my compact Subaru. I didn't see standing water. In fact, the area around Martha seemed dry and the levels in the river were dropping last Sunday. I...

Bass River State Forest road questions

There is a very nice swimming spot a short distance down Martha Road, if the weather is warm enough. Unfortunately the tree swing has been taken down. It was a nice enough swing to to a flip off of it.

    Pa. Protecting Timber Rattlesnake

I have to agree that the NJ side of the Water Gap has a few Timbers. I have also seen Copperheads while rock climbing several routes above Blairstown. I don't think any hikers along the Appalachian have anything to fear.

My first Orchid of the season

Oji and Bob, I know of another location on Haines property that may have bicolor. I don't know enough to be able to tell if it is x bicolor or x canbyii. PM me if you are interested. It is a very sensitive location.

New Found(?) Gun Clubs/Cabins in the Pines

Ironman Loyd! I have been drinking close to six liters of water a day this week while at work. I have been starting work before sunrise and finishing around three. Do you hydrate the night before, because I have found drinking a liter during the evening has helped considerably the following day...

    Insect nest?

Almost, Manumuskin. It is a quote from Voltaire's "Candide". Candide witnesses the execution of an officer by firing squad; and is told that "in this country, it is good to kill an admiral from time to time, in order to encourage the others" The country being referred to is England.
