Interesting. A survey would explain the location of some of the streamers.

Visiting a Swamp 8 Years Later

Teegate, have you or Bobpbx matched the algae to a name? I have only seen that in the cooler cedar areas.

I wear clothing that helps me not to be noticed, which for me is earth tones and camo. Sometimes I am looking for something that is very special to me and I don't want a curious passer-by to start asking questions. The beaver dams have flooded a vast area. I walked a mile above the dike that...

Visiting a Swamp 8 Years Later

Teegate, looks like you had a great Saturday. I have seen algae that looked similar in the cold water streamlets surrounding a couple of iron ore rich bogs I have visited. Some of it had an orange tint though. Beautiful pictures!

    Pinks are up....

Oji, I started to hike in but I left early because the sky looked threatening and I didn't want to be exposed out in the bogs if it began to rain heavily. I could see where the water level was by the black left over residue. It was very high. The pipe set up is definitely making a difference.

    Pinks are up....

While I was walking through Parker Preserve this afternoon, I saw that the fight with the beaver at one of the controls has escalated into a more modern war. A beaver-baffler such as this needs to be constructed at the Webbs Mill's culvert. The pipe past the wooden platform is perforated but it...

    New Comet Discovered

I spent much of my hard earned paper route money at Edmund's and Jackson Hobby when I was in my early teens. I still have the plans for a solar furnace from one of the Edmund's science kits. One of my many hobbies was chasing model rockets, that took me days to build, as they slowly drifted away...

Chris, have you noticed any hunters on the property since the season started? I know where a few stands are will avoid them unless I get short on time and have to cut across the property. I plan on being out along the railroad tracks/Wading this weekend.

Oji, an acre of bright blue must have been impressive. The False Asphodel, is it almost always found within areas that Narthecium is located?

Boyd, I noticed in your map overlay what appears to be an identical set of roads with out the buildings below Steelman Road. Do you know what what might have been in that location or what was eventually supposed to be there?

Al-Qaeda blamed for Europe-wide forest fires

I have to admit that al-Qaeda is very creative in some of its attack schemes. The groups leaders may be watching sixties' reruns of Batman for inspiration. These are acts of desperation and to get media attention. Didn't the Japanese attempt to start forest fires along the west coast with bombs...

    Franklin Parker Preserve

Thanks Ecampbell for the link! I needed a reminder. I had always thought that the property between the back reservoir and Chatsworth-Tuckerton Road was private. I wanted to explore the north-eastern side of the Wading but never did because I thought the property was off limits. Very good!

    Piney Water

Don, I can't remember if it was 2.5 gallons or 5 gallons that was the equivalent of one ton of ag-lime. We also left several bags of hydrated lime along a small feeder stream about one foot underwater to let the motion of wave action and currents to help raise alkalinity over time. Don't forget...

Gentian curve? Teegate was kind enough to help with tips to several locations this year for the Gentian, but I also found a dozen or more roadside this year. The rain we had seemed to help the blooms this Fall. I didn't come across any Fringed Gentians in my travels, as of yet.

    Piney Water

Don, it has been many years since I have done any work with aquatics, but I have had quick results when applying flowable dolomitic lime to large (one acre) fish ponds. I found five gallons of liquid is much easier to apply than one ton of ag-lime. The effects were almost immediate and flowable...
