    Plink...Plink...Plink

Another post reminded me of something. Last Saturday I was working the Barnegat Bay Festival for the Forked River Mountain Coalition. An older guy walked up and started reminiscing about the Forked River Mountains. He told me a good story about a rattler. Seems he and his friend were driving...

    Have you heard?

Have any of you herpers heard that the State is considering putting the spotted turtle on the Threatened list? I heard that from a good friend of mine.

    Flying Squirrel

Rarely seen in the pines as they are secretive and nocturnal. This one got chased up my neighbors trampoline. I did a red-eye correction.

    Windmill at Atsion--Why?

Jerseyman has this map in his photo folder. Why would Atsion need a windmill with all that water around? I'll bet the water was forcing itself out of the ground back then, begging to be used. And why near the tracks like that?

    Huckleberry & Blueberry

The last time Woodjin and I were together we were discussing the technical differences between lowbush blueberry and black huckleberry. In my experience, black huckleberry is more prevalant in the pines. Anyway, it occured to me that there is a very easy way to tell what you have in front of...

    Little Bird

Could I have possibly seen a Black-Throated Blue Warbler today in the cedar swamp? His top and face were jet black, with a blue sheen. His undersides were creamy white, and although his wings were also black, there was a bright flash of white there, as if his secondary or tertial wings were all...

    Photos for Discussion

Nice pink shots Guy. I did not get any worth snot. Here are two I took today after you left. The band was off the bird. I straightened it out. Probably a raptor.

    Texas Hill Country

I had a business trip to Austin Texas last week, so I could not resist a trip to the west, out in the Hill country of South Central Texas. It was really neat, I was pleasantly surprised at how nice it was. It was a great day to be in Texas, and I’d like to share the photos I took. Here is the...

    The sound of music

I'm depressed. I straightened out the spaghetti mess of wires behind my computer, and now the sound system does not play the right speaker (Altec Lansing from 2001). I double checked all connections and did the usual checking in Windows for proper volume and balance. Does anybody have any ideas?

    Forked River Mountain Annual Cleanup

Next Sunday, on 4/19, the cleanup will target the area the behind Bamber locally known as old Carusoville. There are two other areas targeted as well. We seem to have enough hands this year, as a boys academy is coming to help with 26 live souls. However, Guy is coming with Jessica and Ben...

    Pine Barren Memories

I grew up in Presidential Lakes in the 60's. Some of us have been passing around a memories thread. I thought you might find some of these comments interesting, and if you lived at that time in the pines at a Lake Community, it may bring back some memories. You grew up in Presidential Lakes if...

    Gentle Bird

This bird visited the tree in my front yard. Will one of our birders please tell me what it is? I was impressed with the form and coloring, and don't remember ever seeing one.

    Zip

"It didn't start as much at all, just a negro boy with a head too small" (Drive-thru Pharmacy..."Zip the What-is-it") http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zip_the_Pinhead I really wish Mike Bickerson's band would record this CD professionally. He is a member here. The CD is really innovative and...

    Polar Plunge

My daughter and I went to Seaside to watch George (Largo) and an amazing 3,700 other people jump in the frigid ocean. It is an absolute riot and a good time always had by all. It has grown to a huge event. They made $1,100,000 for Special Olympics today. I know it doesn't sound right, but thats...

    Muscle

All this searching for old vehicles on the web made me nostalgic for better days. The below is the 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T that I owned. It had a pumped up 383 magnum engine with the Hurst 4 speed pistol grip shifter. Once she got breathing up around 80 MPH, she really had great pickup. My...

    Out of Sight

Ocean County is apparantly planning to put a garbage transfer station at the intersection of route 539 and the Parkway. One Little Egg Harbor resident wrote to the Beacon Newspaper in an agitated state of mind about this, and suggest a better location would be 3-4 miles out into the Pinelands...
