2016 Forked River Mountain Cleanup Totals

Here are this year's Forked River Mountain Clean-up totals. Let's see, over the 23 years we have been doing this, we've pulled 658 tons of crap out of these sacred woods. That is (said another way) 1,306,000 pounds. I wish to thank all my friends who have participated: Guy and Jess, Scott and...

“Rough and Tumble Pine Plains," A PBX Hike

But you did ask about the surface texture, no? It really is an extreme change in the vegetation. Here is a shot Chris took at the line where the vegetation changes when you cross the road.

    Where is this?

An update. I was there on the 24th, and the water level is the lowest it's been in many years. Maybe the beaver are gone. I hope so, because as you can see by the photos below, they killed a lot of good cedar.

Tall Pines State Preserve - NJ's newest state park

I love the shot "somebody is walking very slow today". I have a soft spot for toddlers. He looks brave way back there.

“Rough and Tumble Pine Plains," A PBX Hike

Boyd, to the west of the lines, the land gradually dips down into an upper tributary of the Plains Branch. Here the trees grow taller and become more deciduous and dense towards the Branch (and so does the ground cover). To the east we have classic pine plains vegetation, which is mostly about 8...

    Introducing our National Mammal

Gee 46'r, can't you, who scours the internet for interesting tid-bits, come up with a better photo than that for our majestic mammal? If it wasn't for the hairless coat, I'd have no idea what that is.

    New metal signs in Wharton

That question you just put to Guy is a little harsh. You did not mean to make it sound so incriminating, did you?

    Resource for Bladderwort ID?

You are missing U. geminiscapa, U. biflora, U. minor, and U. radiata has been documented in New Jersey. Not sure if it's native.

    Resource for Bladderwort ID?

I have not found that even the broad-area technical manuals are truly useful (though I have not found any in NJ that I could not identify based upon them). What is sorely needed is a treatment having multiple close up photos of the corolla. I don't know of any like that for New Jersey. Let me...

    Where is this?

You know, now would be a perfect time for a lot of us to go there en masse and finally remove all the sticks that have built up into those mounds over the past 10 years. Having those sticks in HUGE heaps only makes it much easier for the beaver. They simply bridge the space between them when we...

    Motor vehicle inspection changes

Once again, our own self-appointed Ralph Nader (Jeff Tittel) feels compelled to utter some nonsensical statistics that are never challenged or backed up. In regards to the new rules, I think it should be 'two' strikes and you are out. Some people are savvy enough to make a repair on their own...
